About the Role

Data Architecture Intern


Smart Data Solutions, a leading provider of data management, claim routing and workflow solutions to health plans and TPAs, is looking for a Data Architecture Intern to join our team!

The DBA Intern will support the database and cloud engineering teams in migrating on‑premise databases to AWS and establishing a scalable reporting environment. This role provides hands-on exposure to cloud database services, data pipelines, and reporting architectures, making it ideal for candidates interested in cloud computing, data engineering, and analytics.


What you’ll be doing?

  • Assist with database migration activities from on‑premise environments to AWS (planning, validation, testing) 
  • Support setup and configuration of AWS database services such as: 
  • Amazon RDS (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Amazon Aurora (as applicable)
  • Help implement backup, recovery, and monitoring strategies in AWS 
  • Assist with data validation and reconciliation post-migration to ensure data accuracy 
  • Support the design and setup of a reporting environment, including: 
  • Creating and optimizing reporting schemas or views
  • Supporting BI/reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Amazon QuickSight)
  • Write and optimize SQL queries for reporting and analytics use cases 
  • Assist with performance tuning, indexing, and data quality checks 
  • Help document database architectures, migration steps, and reporting standards 
  • Collaborate with application teams, data analysts, and cloud engineers
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What we’re looking for?

Required skills:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field 
  • Basic understanding of relational databases and data modeling concepts 
  • Proficiency with SQL (SELECTs, joins, aggregations, basic indexes) 
  • Familiarity with at least one database platform: 
  • SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle
  • Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts (preferably AWS) 
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to learn new tools and technologies quickly


Preferred Skills:

  • Exposure to AWS services, especially RDS, S3, EC2, or IAM
  • Familiarity with ETL / data pipelines or data integration concepts
  • Experience or coursework with reporting or BI tools 
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash)
  • Understanding data security, access controls, or compliance concepts
  • Interest in automation and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
