About the Role

Maintenance Engineer, Intern

This role is part of the Intern Program and is designed to attract top-performing undergraduate students studying Bachelor of Engineering or related disciplines. It provides interns with projects that contribute to Smith+Nephew’s goals while supporting their career development. The program offers meaningful work experiences, along with team-building events and social activities when available. Successful interns will gain valuable exposure to the medical device industry, helping shape career decisions and creating potential future employment opportunities.
 

What will you be doing?
Work closely with managers to execute targeted projects and present conclusions to senior leadership. Support preventive maintenance tasks, including equipment testing, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation such as work instructions, checklists, and reports. Assist with spare part inventory management, maintenance data collection, and KPI reporting, while participating in maintenance projects, equipment installations, improvements, and contributing to the team’s overall goals and organizational maintenance strategies.
 

What will you need to be successful?

  • This internship is open to undergraduates currently enrolled at an accredited university, majoring in Engineering or a related discipline. Candidates should maintain excellent academic standing, with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher. The position is based in Batu Kawan, Penang, and previous intern, part-time, or apprenticeship experience is considered an advantage.

  • Interns should have a strong interest in working with manufacturing equipment and possess a basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems. Knowledge of PLC programming, CNC equipment, and Maintenance Management Software is a plus. A strong safety mindset and commitment to maintaining safe work practices are essential. Leadership experience and effective project management skills are preferred.

  • The role requires strong communication skills, including technical writing, listening, and speaking, as well as the ability to influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Interns should demonstrate high learning agility, analytical problem-solving skills, and the ability to assess technical issues and develop solutions. Independent thinking, teamwork, and the ability to present insights to senior leaders are also key competencies for success in this role.
