Pay Range: $25- $28 / hour, depending on experience 

Position Summary

The Safety Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting field safety efforts on active construction job sites. The role focuses on learning hazard recognition, participating in daily job briefings, and assisting safety and operations teams in executing safe work practices. The intern will work closely with experienced safety professionals and field leadership to understand how safety is applied in real-world conditions.  

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Support field teams by participating in daily job briefings and helping identify potential hazards before work begins.
  • Assist with jobsite walks focused on hazard recognition, safe work practices, and overall site conditions.
  • Observe work activities and provide feedback to crews and supervisors on opportunities to improve safety and recognize positive behaviors.
  • Document jobsite inspections, observations, and corrective actions assigned.
  • Assist in preparing safety related materials such as JHAs, toolbox talks, and training materials.
  • Assist with incident management and documentation to learn the fundamentals of incident investigations.
  • Participate in safety meetings and learn how safety expectations are communicated across crews and leadership.
  • Assist in preparing safety documentation where necessary, updating databases, training records, site safety plans, and safe work procedures.
  • Gain exposure to dynamic work environments including heavy equipment, live railroad tracks, and industrial operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the safety and operations team.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a related field of study such as Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Strong interest in construction safety and field operations.
  • Willingness to learn and engage with field crews and supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Proficient with common computer tools such as Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn other software used for tracking and documentation.
  • Strong attention to the detail, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to work independently and take initiative.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Frequent standing, walking, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to active construction sites, including heavy equipment and live rail environments.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Use of required personal protective equipment at all times in the field.
  • Subject to all safety rules and site-specific requirements.
