Why join our team?
Combustion Aerothermal Systems is one of the Combustion module departments within the Turbomachinery organization. The department is responsible for design and validation of the combustion section of turbofan, turboprop, and turboshaft engines. The aerothermal design process uses various numerical tools, including CFD simulations, with validation testing in rigs and engines. This internship will focus on CFD prediction and validation of the NOx emissions created by the combustion process in a gas turbine engine.
What will your day-to-day look like?
Prepare combustion chamber geometry using ANSYS CAD tools
Mesh geometry using ANSYS meshing tools
Review of NOx prediction models available in open literature and comparison to the models implemented in ANSYS Fluent
Perform combustion CFD simulations in ANSYS Fluent with primary focus on the prediction of the NOx created by the combustion process
Review combustor NOx data measured on engines to understand key variables and the measurement details
Perform CFD simulations with the NOx models available in ANSYS Fluent and compare the predictions to engine data
Implement a new NOx model obtained from the literature survey in ANSYS Fluent
Summarize and present findings
Document the findings in a report
What You Will Learn
Gas turbine engine combustion system components and function
Gaseous emissions
CFD improvement and validation process
Pratt & Whitney Canada's engine portfolio
Teamwork & group dynamics
