Internal Combustion Engine R&D Internship

Duration: 6 months (on-site)

Position Summary:

Power Systems is the Rolls-Royce business which provides world-class power solutions and complete life-cycle support under our product and solution brand mtu. Through digitalisation and electrification, we strive to develop drive and power generation solutions that provide answers to the challenges posed by the rapidly growing societal demands for energy and mobility.

We deliver and service comprehensive, powerful and reliable systems, based on both gas and diesel engines, as well as electrified hybrid systems. These technologically advanced solutions serve our customers in the marine and infrastructure sectors worldwide.

This 6-month internship can flex earlier or later based on student availability. This is a weekly on-site position in Aiken, SC.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supporting Calibration Engineers with coordinating, preparing and performing combustion engine development

  • Supporting Calibration Engineers with testing and engineering support work in an engine dynamometer test cell and when necessary, in the field

  • Learning about engine development and calibration challenges and how to address them

  • Providing engineering support for production test cells

  • Handling moderately complex problems

  • Keeping management informed of workload status, issues, and upcoming assignments

  • Following company and professional ethics regarding the handling and protection of confidential information

  • Maintaining professional relationships with employees, clients, and customers, both internal and external

  • Following the guidance of experienced engineers and learning from their expertise

Who we’re looking for:

  • (Required) Diesel Combustion engine lectures or engine lab experience in progress or completed

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others

  • Good organizational, planning and follow-up skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

Preferred:

  • Passion for Internal combustion engine testing, optimization and development

  • Introduction to Thermal Fluid Sciences courses completed

  • Know-how of diesel combustion engine measurement technology

Relevant majors: Attending an accredited college/university and will be continuing your education after the role. You must be working towards a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related degree.

Minimum GPA: 3.0
