About the Role
Job Overview

Location: UMMC West Bank Discharge Pharmacy, Minneapolis MN

Hours: Casual hours bi-weekly

Schedule: day, every other weekend

 

This position is intended for students enrolled or planning to enroll in Pharmacy School for the Fall of 2026!

 

The Pharmacy Intern will provide clinical care to patients of the pharmacy. Assist the pharmacy manager in the operation and management of the pharmacy. Provide indirect supervision for support staff and ensure adherence to all policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Receive prescriptions from patients and gather appropriate information per department policy.
  • Assist in the preparation and dispensing of medications and supplies as assigned, including counting, pouring, and labeling prescriptions
  • Verify insurance and resolve issues in a manner that will serve the customer’s needs. Address third party prescription questions, which may include prior authorizations, vacation supplies, dose changes, price check and drug utilization review.
  • Process new and refill prescriptions in the computer system quickly and accurately; including entering refill authorization requests and entering and calculating complex prescriptions such as compounds and injectables.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the computer system. Utilize the reporting system as necessary. Process manual prescriptions including EZ-DME, breast pumps and Worker’s Compensation, in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Respond to internal and external customer questions and concerns in a professional and customer-focused manner.
  • Handle cash register transactions quickly and accurately.
  • Duties may include scheduling, maintaining pharmacy software and automation systems, bookkeeping activities, on-site training of staff and acting as a primary resource for problem solving.
  • Perform under the direction of the Pharmacist to assist with identifying and resolving patient specific medication related issues in the patient’s best interest.
  • Provide training to new and current staff on areas of expertise including computer/software, insurance plans and problems that may occur, customer service, and other processes.
  • Under the direction of the pharmacist, prepare drug therapy for patients in an accurate and timely fashion in accordance with all legal requirements, regulatory agencies, and Fairview Policy.
  • Deliver medications, supplies and equipment to patient care areas and other clinical areas as appropriate.
  • Maintain proficiency in the skills and theory of the practice of pharmacy by reviewing literature, attending in-services, seminars, and conferences.
  • Perform administrative duties as assigned by the manager.


Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a Student at an ACPE accredited school of Pharmacy beginning Fall
  • Excellent customer service skills, proficient in English language, capable of solving problems effectively, ability to follow policies and procedures, and competent mathematical skills.
  • Pharmacy Intern Registration with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a Student at the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy
  • Previous pharmacy experience.
