Description:

Position Purpose:  

In accordance with the Mission and Guiding Behaviors; the Student Support Assistant provides a safe and supportive environment for hospital patients. Assists with patient activities assigned by the healthcare worker managing the case. Assists with various patient care duties, maintains a clean environment, and assists other colleagues as  

needed.

  • Meets population specific and all other competencies according to department requirements. 

  •  Promotes a Culture of Safety by adhering to policy, procedures and plans that are in place to prevent workplace injury, violence or adverse outcome to associates and patients 

  •  Relationship-based Care: Creates a caring and healing environment that keeps the patient and family at the center of care throughout their experience at Mount Carmel following the principles of our interdisciplinary care delivery system. 

  • (For patient care providers) Provides care, ensures an environment of patient safety, promotes evidence-based practice and quality initiatives. 

  • Follows hospital and department procedures. 

  • Uses universal precautions. 

  • Uses designated isolation precautions as appropriate. 

  • Assists with intraoperative positioning as assigned.  

  • Main patient’s proper body alignment. 

  • Uses assistive devices for immobilization and to support extremities. 

  • Assists with draping the patient, ensuring protection of eyes and minimizing pressure to bony prominences. 

  • Verifies integrity of sterile packaging and sterilization indicators. 

  • Open sterile supplies and instruments using aseptic technique. 

  • Assists with room turnover. 

  • Transports patients to the appropriate department. 

  • Places specimens in appropriate container for transport. 

  • Safely transports specimen to Lab/Pathology and logs appropriately. 

  • Obtains and cleans equipment as requested; returns equipment to its proper location and helps to move equipment needed into the OR. 

  • Keeps equipment tidy and in order when not in use, and the hallways clear and neat. 

  • Maintains direct communication with each operating room and provides supplies needed, as directed by the circulating nurse. 

  • Performs decontamination process and procedures. 

  • Performs assembly process and procedures. 

  • Performs sterilization process and procedures. 

  • Performs case cart preparation process utilizing designated pick lists.  

 

Other Job Responsibilities: 

  • Attends required in-services, workshops and staff meetings. 

  • Responsible for compliance with Organizational Integrity through raising questions and promptly reporting actual or potential wrongdoing 

  • All other duties as assigned 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education: Currently enrolled in the Tolles 2x2 Cohort Internship Program 

  • Licensure / Certification: N/A 

  • Experience: No experience required 

  • Effective Communication Skills 

  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions 

  • Ability to complete assignments under direct periodic supervision 

  • Ability to communicate with patients, visitors, and all colleagues clearly and respectfully 

  • Ability to work in a team environment 

  • Ability to work a variety of shifts/variable schedules 

  • Ability to work with a diverse population 

  • Ability to operate patient beds and various mobility equipment 

  • Ability to operate communication equipment
