About the Role

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAY 5, 2026

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE), a rapidly growing commuter rail operation connecting Washington, DC with Northern Virginia, and surrounding counties, is recruiting a highly motivated college level Engineering Intern to work for the Chief Engineer. The Engineering Intern will support Design and Construction Department by assisting with research, developing project drawings/ exhibits, organizing plans and specifications, and performing data analysis. This position is based at VRE’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA. Typical work schedule is approximately 25 hours per week but may increase based on assignments.

Internship Focus: 

  • Refine VRE’s Project Cost Tool using information from recent similar projects. The tool should be well-crafted, data driven, and tailored to VRE project needs. The intern will strive to explore VRE and regional data sources, uncover or highlight trends. 
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) data population and validation
  • Organizing project materials of past projects and projects currently in development and implementation. This effort will be used to collect information for the Project Cost Tool and serve as an ongoing resource for VRE staff.
  • Assist VRE with project data entry and data migration from E-Builder to SharePoint.
  • Other duties as assigned

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in engineering (civil preferred) 

 or new graduate accepted for enrollment in post-graduate studies in engineering (civil preferred) for the Fall 2026 semester

  • Writing and graphic skills
  • Skill in drafting using CAD (MicroStation preferred)
  • Skill in performing data analysis using software such as MS Excel, MS Project
  • Strong interest in commuter rail operations and engineering
  • Valid United States Driver’s License

Compensation & Benefits

The Engineering Intern offers a competitive hourly wage at $20- $28/hr. depending on education and experience. VRE offers free parking, transportation on our trains, or transit benefits up to $325 per month.
