About the Role

Energy Transfer/Sunoco is a master limited partnership that owns and operates one of the largest and most diversified portfolios of energy assets in the United States. In total, the Company owns and operates approximately 150,000 miles of natural gas, crude oil, refined products, and natural gas liquids pipelines, terminals, and acquisition and marketing assets which are used to facilitate the purchase and sale of crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, and refined products.

This is a twelve (12) week paid internship program beginning May 2026. You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program with an expected graduation date in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.  

Position Summary

The IT Terminal Automation Intern will support PLC and control system initiatives within terminal operations. This internship provides hands-on exposure to industrial automation, terminal management systems, and control technologies that support operational efficiency, safety, and compliance. The intern will work alongside experienced automation professionals on active projects involving PLC systems, hardware testing, documentation, and system troubleshooting.

This role is ideal for students pursuing degrees in Electrical Engineering, Automation Technology, Industrial Technology, Computer Engineering, or related technical disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with PLC project development, configuration, and implementation
  • Support wiring, assembly, and organization of PLC and Flow Control Module (FCM) cabinets
  • Perform point-to-point checkout testing for PLC systems
  • Test PLC hardware and components in a lab environment prior to field deployment
  • Assist with updates to CAD drawings related to PLC and FCM systems
  • Maintain and update documentation for Terminal Management Systems (TMS) and PLC infrastructure
  • Conduct Human Machine Interface (HMI) testing and validation in lab settings
  • Support redline markups and documentation revisions for automation systems
  • Provide basic troubleshooting assistance for PLC-related issues
  • Maintain master inventory lists of PLCs, radios, switches, HMIs, and spare parts
  • Organize storage areas and ensure equipment and parts are accurately logged and tracked

 



Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Industrial Technology, Instrumentation, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Basic understanding of PLCs, control systems, or industrial automation concepts
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a technical team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with PLC programming environments
  • Exposure to CAD software or technical drawings
  • Understanding of industrial networking, instrumentation, or terminal operations
  • Prior internship, lab, or project experience related to automation or controls
