Summer Communications Intern Position Description

Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) is a nonprofit youth development organization serving New Mexico. We inspire young adults to make a positive difference in themselves and their communities. Through training and service, Corpsmembers discover their potential for healthy, productive lives.
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Summer Communications Intern will play a supportive role in advancing RMYC’s outreach and storytelling efforts while continuing to develop professional skills. This office and field based position will support the Development Director and work in collaboration with RMYC Conservation staff to highlight the impact of RMYC conservation crews across central and northern New Mexico.
This individual will not serve in a supervisory role but will contribute to organizational communications by assisting with newsletter development and showcasing summer project work. The Summer Communications Intern occupies a unique role that allows for development of professional communication skills, exposure to nonprofit conservation operations, and the opportunity to contribute to mission-driven storytelling. For the right individual, this position serves as a pathway toward future opportunities in communications, nonprofit work, or marketing.
POSITION TYPE: Seasonal, full time, exempt New MexiCorps member
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday from 7:00am–3:30pm; occasional weekends required for overnight camping and project support
STIPEND: $1493.60 biweekly stipend ($18.67/hr equivalent over 80 hours/pay period) w/ cash Education Award, Sick Leave provided by ServeNM
EDUCATION AWARD: $1,956.35 upon completion of 450-hour Service Term
REPORTS TO: Development Director
DATES: May 11, 2026 - August 7, 2026
LOCATION: RMYC Albuquerque Office 2921 2nd St. SW, Albuquerque, NM 87107 with travel to project locations throughout central and northern New Mexico. Participants must have reliable transportation to and from this location, according to their work schedule for the duration of the season.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Mentorship from the Development Director and RMYC Conservation Staff
Opportunities to build communication and professional skills through newsletter development and storytelling
Training in nonprofit communications, digital content organization, and professional communication
Exposure to conservation, public lands stewardship, and youth development work
Opportunities to build a professional portfolio of written and visual content
First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
Mental Health First Aid Certification
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with managing RMYC’s social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok), aiming for 3-5 posts per week.
Travel to project sites to capture photos, videos, interviews, and stories from crews working across New Mexico.
Camp overnight with crews in remote backcountry locations as needed to document multi-day projects.
Help create simple graphics, captions, reels, and other digital content using Canva or similar tools.
Support drafting distributing RMYC’s monthly e-newsletter.
Model professionalism and support RMYC’s mission through clear and effective communication
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
At least 18 years of age as of first date of employment
US Citizen or Legal Resident
Able to complete entire length of service term
Organized, reliable, and able to manage time and deadlines
Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
Interest in communications, marketing, writing, or nonprofit work
Legal and insurable Driver’s License and ability to drive RMYC program vehicles to access project sites.
Ability to pass a comprehensive background check
Comfortable spending full days outdoors in all weather conditions.
Enjoy working with young people, conservation crews, and diverse communities

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:
Experience with writing, social media, or digital content creation
Familiarity with basic design or content tools (e.g., Canva, Google Suite, iMovie)
Interest in conservation, communications, outdoor work, or youth development
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time
Travel to project sites with crew members
Ability to traverse uneven, steep terrain
Work in an office and field setting with exposure to outdoor environments such as rain, heat, snow, elevation, etc.
