The Position

The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) is a highly
competitive student research program at Roche. It offers the most talented graduate and medical degree students the opportunity to be fully integrated into our interdisciplinary and international industry R&D environment. The Neuroscience and Rare Diseases Discovery and Translational Area (NRD DTA) is developing medicines for a range of serious neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism, spinal muscular atrophy, and Huntington’s disease.

As a RiSE student in the NRD DTA you will join the Neurovascular Distribution Lab and work on a joint project between the Neuroimmunology and Neurotechnologies sections at the Roche Innovation Center Basel, Switzerland. We are a
multidisciplinary team with expertise in neuroimmunology, neurovascular biology, blood-brain barrier function, disease biology and in vivo models of the central nervous system.


The Opportunity

  • Performing exploratory lab work to investigate the targeting of the CNS meninges using various modalities in vivo

  • Visualizing the cranio-meningeal compartment and exploring suitable delivery methods

  • Performing animal work (LTK1 or similar required)

  • Optimizing dissection and staining conditions for dura and leptomeninges

  • Applying state of the art imaging techniques including confocal microscopy

  • Using state-of-the-art tissue clearing and lightsheet microscopy to analyze the intact cranio-meningeal compartment

  • Summarizing your work for internal and external meetings and draft a publication

  • You will be hosted and mentored by a Roche scientist who will guide you through your research and provide you with the needed work infrastructure and collaborative network

Who You Are

  • You graduated with a Master's degree less than a year ago OR you are enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program at a university.

  • You are looking to expand your experience with an industry internship.

  • You hold a valid LTK1/FELASA B animal licence.

  • You are proficient in neuroscience and/or vascular biology.

  • You have extensive experience in imaging methodologies including whole mount immunofluorescence stainings and you have good knowledge of analysis methods for imaging datasets.

  • Experience with dural/leptomeningeal biology and anatomy will be beneficial.

  • You are passionate about answering fundamental questions in neurovascular biology with high translational impact.
