About The Company
When industrial operations depend on heat that simply cannot fail, Chromalox brings unmatched technical knowledge and high‑performance electric heating solutions that stand the test of time in the harshest conditions. Our technologies deliver resilience and consistency while enabling practical, real‑world progress toward decarbonization.
About the Role

Application Engineering Intern

Composed of Chromalox, Durex Industries, Vulcanic, and Thermocoax businesses, Electrical Thermal Solutions (ETS), part of Spirax Group, creates electrical process heating and temperature management solutions, including industrial heaters and systems, heat tracing, and a range of component technologies.

At Chromalox, we build advanced thermal technologies for the world’s most challenging industrial heating applications.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we got our start with an innovative solution 100 years ago when a self-taught engineer invented the first metal-sheathed resistance heating element. It was this then-advanced thermal technology that launched an entire industry.

We excel in industries that have high expectations. We are acknowledged as experts at delivering solutions that exceed specifications, limit risk, and reduce operating costs.

Join us as we continue to provide solutions to our customers and the world!

The Role:

The Engineering Intern supports the Application Engineering team by assisting in the evaluation, selection, and application of thermal solutions to meet customer requirements. This role contributes to delivering accurate, timely technical support by collaborating with sales, engineering, and operations. The intern will develop practical engineering skills through hands-on involvement in product selection, system design considerations, and customer-focused problem solving within a fast-paced, solutions-driven environment.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Assist in evaluating customer applications and recommending appropriate thermal solutions, including product selection and configuration.
  • Support the preparation of technical quotes by interpreting specifications, performing basic engineering calculations, and selecting standard and configurable products.
  • Collaborate with Application Engineers, Sales Engineers, and cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and timely technical responses to customer inquiries.
  • Develop and maintain product knowledge across heaters, sensors, and thermal systems to support application-based problem solving.
  • Assist in troubleshooting customer applications by analyzing requirements, identifying potential solutions, and supporting root cause investigations.
  • Support special and engineered-to-order (ETO) or purchase-to-order (PTO/PTOD) requests by gathering technical and vendor information as needed.
  • Utilize internal systems and tools to document application details, maintain accurate records, and support quote and order accuracy.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, tools, and technical resources used by the Application Engineering team.

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related discipline preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering fundamentals to real-world problems, including basic calculations and analytical thinking.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to manage tasks independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in standard PC applications (e.g., Microsoft Office); exposure to engineering tools, CAD, or ERP/CRM systems is a plus.
