Department Overview

PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
 

Position Summary

 

Power Generation (Project Engineering) is looking for a talented summer intern to work alongside PG&E Project Engineers. Project Engineers provide engineering, project management, and technical support to O&M staff, for small to large capital and expense improvements to power generation and infrastructure facilities. Projects are normally discipline specific and may include upgrades or replacement of turbine/generator, boiler, auxiliary equipment or improvements to civil water conveyance or infrastructure features. Job duties will vary by assignment. The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with a team of experienced Project Engineers.  Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Hydro organization through the work they will be performing.  
 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
 
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering. Students must be continuing their education with returning back to school in the Fall of 2026 full time.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license prior to start date.  

 

  • Students must be in good academic standing.

 

  • Be able to accommodate field location work fifty (50) percent of the time. 

 

Desired:

 

  • EIT or FE certification

 

  • Academic school projects related to Utility or Energy Hydroelectric listed on resume

 

  • Prior PG&E internship

 

  • 3.0 GPA or greater

 

  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation

 

  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members

 

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills, communication skills, both oral and written. Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction.
