Colorado Springs Utilities is looking for a motivated and engaged high school student seeking an opportunity to gain knowledge and experiences in a STEP role where concepts learned in the academic environment to job-related, hands-on experiences can be applied in future work settings.
Colorado Springs Utilities offers the School To Employment Program (STEP) for talented high school students. STEP is a partnership with local high schools which focuses on high school students, 16 years or older, interested in gaining exposure to Colorado Springs Utilities and the roles and services it offers. STEP allows students to gain work-related training in order to prepare for the workplace after graduation. Additionally, this position is available to high school graduates for up to 6 months post graduation.
In this student-based experience, you will:
- learn from and assist the electric crews and actively work with them on their projects
- be taught and understand the foundational workings and complexities of the electric crews, the different projects that they work on and driving home the value and absolute necessity for safety of self and crew members
- receive an overview and training of all safety procedures at Colorado Springs Utilities
- receive foundational training of electrical theory, to include basic electrical concepts such as source, conduction, load, voltage, amperage, resistance, Ohm's law, wattage, circuit theory, etc.
- be provided all Personal Protective Equipment
- be taught and mentored on the use of hand-tools and construction tools
- learn professional development/guidance on team interaction/engagement and professional etiquette, i.e., showing up on time, communication with supervisor and crew, and taking constructive feedback to continually grow as a professional
- materials management & equipment prep for linemen ; based on projects for the day; evaluating material needs, inventory and check-out
- work with hand lines for sending equipment and materials “up” to linemen and being taught all the appropriate knots and proper processes
- take tours of Colorado Springs Utilities electrical facilities
What will it take to be successful? Prospective candidates must coordinate their application with their counselor and a written recommendation from the counselor MUST accompany your application attached with your resume as one document ONLY. (The application system does not allow for multiple attachments, only one)
- You MUST be 16 years or older and currently enrolled in high school; students graduating in May of 2026 are also eligible
- Hourly pay is based on your enrollment status; current students - $16.78/hr and May 2026 graduates - $19.17/hr
- You must have and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and are in good standing at your respective high school and a good attendance record and no disciplinary concerns
- Enrolled in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) or relevant program at your high school is preferred, but not required
**This position will begin on June 8th and will be full-time hours throughout the summer and up to 20 hours, with a minimum of 10 hours per week through the school year.
**You must be available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, up to 40, during your summer break; with flexibility available for existing commitments. A minimum of 8 weeks of commitment is required to be considered, and those students who are able to work into the school year the most desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
-Exerts 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
-Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
