About the Role

CME Group is currently looking for a Legal Department summer intern to join our Chicago office.

This candidate will assist the Legal Department with day-to-day activities in support of ongoing legal matters. You will handle legal analysis and research tasks across a wide range of subject matter areas, including commercial contracts, intellectual property, and complex regulatory projects.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Legal Research & Analysis: Conduct comprehensive research on federal and state regulations (including CFTC and SEC compliance), case law, and industry trends to support the drafting of legal memoranda.

  • Contract Lifecycle Support: Assist in the initial review, redlining, and organization of commercial agreements, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), and vendor contracts.

  • Regulatory Filings: Support the team in preparing and organizing materials for regulatory submissions and internal compliance audits.

  • Project Management: Maintain legal databases and tracking systems for intellectual property filings, litigation hold notices, or corporate governance documents.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Attend internal meetings and take concise minutes to help coordinate legal strategy across different business units.

Skills / Software Requirements

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of Google Workspace tools.

  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex legal concepts into actionable business advice.

  • Attention to Detail: A high degree of accuracy in proofreading and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Discretion: Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with the utmost professional integrity.

Preferred Experience:

Prior experience or a demonstrated interest in financial markets, derivatives, or corporate law is a significant plus.

Education & Residency

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school (1L or 2L preferred).

  • Location: Candidates must be local to Chicago and available to work in-person/hybrid as required by department policy.

Actual pay offered will be dependent on a wide array of factors including but not limited to: relevant experience, skills, education, location of the internship, and the internship area of focus.
