What's in it for you:
This is a full time summer internship with Trane beginning in May 2026 and ending in August 2026. The assignment is intended to provide an opportunity to experience HVAC compressor engineering design activities and responsibilities while contributing to business goals. Scope of activities will be based on candidate's demonstrated abilities, with the intent to provide an appropriate level of benefit to the business and to the individual’s educational experience.

 

What you will do:

Key Competencies

  • Demonstrates an ability to translate complex HVAC data and models into technical reports and peer reviewed publications.

  • Seeks opportunities to pursue information, experience, and feedback.

  • Imagines new possibilities and creates new business solutions. Possesses a deep understanding of first-principles thermodynamics that can be applied to designing and building novel HVAC hardware.

  • Manages laboratory experimental testing, including sensor calibration, data acquisition, troubleshooting, and data analysis.

  • Expertise in developing high-fidelity thermodynamic simulation and reduced-order models in Python-based tools.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist Engineers in the day-to-day tasks of design and development of water heating unit.

  • Assist in the selection and procurement of parts.

  • Assist in the unit build and test.

  • Perform data analysis and model creation suitable for use in a building model.

 

What you will bring:

Working towards a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering program or similar.

Overall GPA 3.0 or above

Strong background in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics

Experience with computer modeling in MATLAB and Python.

Good communication skills.

Demonstrated leadership skills (minimum of one example in the last four years such as: school club officer, sports team captain, resident advisor, etc. or exceptional leadership of work projects).
