About the Role

Now hiring: Ignite program: Prep Primary Teacher Intern 

Employment Terms: Full-Time, 2 year contact 

Start date: August 2026

End date: June 2028


We are currently seeking a Prep Primary Teacher Intern who will provide differentiated classroom support, co-teaching, individual & small group instruction, supply coverage, and Before School Program supervision and instruction. The Prep Primary Teacher Intern will also deliver curriculum and/or co curricular programming and related, grading, reporting, and parent/student communication. A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teachers and students is essential.

The UCC Teacher Intern program supports the delivery of UCC’s missions and vision of providing transformational learning experiences for students. The program expands UCC’s talent pipeline by attracting promising early career teachers and providing exceptional development opportunities. 

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

Curriculum/Co-Curricular Delivery

  • Lead and/or support curriculum delivery and relevant subject-specific content in an age-appropriate and pedagogically sound manner;

  • Lead and/or support co-curricular experiences in athletics, arts or clubs;

  • Provide timely and accurate assessment of student work; 

  • Write personalized report/co curricular comments as required;

  • Assist with parent-teacher & student-led conferences, parent information evenings, special events, etc;

  • Fully participate in the Norval program, including overnight excursions.


Support Student Learning

  • Provide individual, small group, and whole class instruction to support student learning as directed;

  • Address student social-emotional needs and promote a positive classroom environment;

  • Collaboratively plan with teachers to ensure effective instruction and learning experiences;

  • Assist with operational tasks such as marking, preparing materials, and organizing classroom resources.


Classroom Management and Administrative Support

  • Contribute to classroom management and enforce discipline as needed;

  • Perform supervisory duties during break times and transitions;

  • Provide coverage for classroom teachers when they are absent;

  • Assist with organizing and supervising field trips;

  • Support teachers in conducting parent-teacher conferences and student-led conferences;

  • Assist with parent information evenings, special events, and other school activities.


Collaborative Engagement and Professional Development

  • Participate in faculty and team meetings, assemblies, and professional development opportunities;

  • Coach athletics and/or lead co-curricular arts, activities, or clubs;

  • Fully participate and assist with field trips as part of the Norval program, including overnight excursions and outdoor education activities.


Other duties

  • Perform supervisory duties;

  • Coverage for classroom teachers, as needed;

  • Lead the Before School Program.


Job Requirements

Experience, Knowledge and Competencies: 

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in education;

  • Teaching certificate issued by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) or enrollment in a recognized teacher education program preferred;

  • One year of previous experience working in an education or closely related setting but not always required;

  • Experience with lesson planning, curriculum development, and classroom management is beneficial;

  • Experience in the teaching of literacy and special education is beneficial;

  • Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum and relevant subject areas;

  • Knowledge of Google Drive, Google Docs and Gmail required;

  • Basic understanding of educational theories, teaching methods, and instructional strategies;

  • Basic understanding of assessment and evaluation practices to measure student progress;

  • Basic understanding of diverse learning needs and the ability to differentiate instruction accordingly;

  • Basic knowledge of the International Baccalaureate - Primary Years Program is beneficial;

  • Basic knowledge of teaching literacy, and special education is beneficial;

  • Basic knowledge of classroom management techniques to maintain an effective and positive learning environment;

  • Awareness of educational technology tools and their integration into the classroom;

  • Understanding of relevant legislation and policies, such as the Education Act and the Ontario College of Teachers' Ethical Standards;

  • Knowledge of classroom management techniques to maintain an effective and positive learning environment;

  • Ability to analyze student learning needs and adjust teaching strategies accordingly;

  • Problem-solving skills to address challenges in student behaviour, academic performance, and classroom dynamics;

  • Adaptability to changing circumstances and the ability to identify and implement effective solutions;

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with students, teachers, parents, and other educational professionals;

  • Ability to convey information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;

  • Active listening skills to understand student and colleague concerns and provide appropriate support;

  • Understanding of educational policies, procedures, and administrative processes;

  • Ability to assist with administrative tasks, such as record-keeping, grading, and organizing classroom materials;

  • Proficiency in using educational technology and learning management systems;

  • Awareness of privacy and data protection protocols when dealing with student information

  • Awareness of handling and maintenance of physical teaching aids, equipment, and resources.

This job is for an existing vacancy. Compensation is based on qualifications and  experience. The salary for this position is $55,000 to $73,000.
