About The Company
Echodyne designs and builds advanced radar solutions that unlock new capabilities for intelligent systems and autonomous machines and shatter price-performance barriers for sensor arrays. Our combination of patented metamaterials electronically scanned array (MESA®) technology with powerful software ultimately means significantly greater situational awareness that increases safety and saves lives. Our first radar is the size of a paperback book, weighs less than bowling pin, draws less power than a light bulb, yet outperforms every comparable radar on the market. We are just getting started. Echodyne delivers commercial radar solutions for end users and integrators in Government and Defense, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Autonomous Vehicle markets globally. The company is based in Kirkland, Washington and backed by Bill Gates, NEA, Madrona Venture Group, Baillie Gifford, Vulcan Capital, Vanedge Capital, and Irongrey among others. About the Role

Radar Reinvented.

Echodyne offers the world’s first compact solid-state true beam-steering radar for a wide range of industries and applications. Our high-performance radars work in all weather and are designed for autonomous vehicles, uncrewed aircraft & drones, and security of borders, critical infrastructure, and smart cities. The company combines the patented technology of metamaterials with powerful software to create a radar sensor with unprecedented performance at commercial price points. Echodyne offers its radars to companies working in Automotive, Transportation, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Border Security, Smart Cities, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Airspace Management including Urban Air Mobility (UTM).

Echodyne is seeking a Summer Intern – Mechanical Engineering to support our accessory development and sustaining product engineering teams.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for an intern to assist in the mechanical refinement of our radar systems and deployment accessories, including high-priority updates to our Radar Development Kit (RDK) and EchoShield product lines. This role offers hands-on experience in the hardware design lifecycle—from CAD modeling and tolerance analysis to documentation within a professional PLM environment. This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in hardware design, electromechanical integration, and manufacturing to contribute to mission-critical radar technology. The Mentor for this internship is the Principal Engineer, Mechanical.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design & Modeling: Support the mechanical design process by creating and refining 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings in alignment with Echodyne’s drafting standards.
  • Product Sustaining: Assist in engineering updates for existing product lines.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Manage engineering changes and technical documentation within the Arena PLM system, ensuring all data meets rigorous change process requirements.
  • Technical Analysis: Perform tolerance stack-up analyses to ensure proper fit, function, and reliability of mechanical assemblies and accessories.

ESSENTIAL DELIVERABLES

  • CAD & Drawing Package: A complete set of updated models and drawings as assigned, fully compliant with Echodyne standards.
  • PLM Documentation: Successfully executed Change Orders (COs) or documentation updates within Arena PLM for product sustaining tasks.
  • Final Presentation: A summary of technical contributions, including design trade-offs, update process and results of tolerance analyses.

AS TIME ALLOWS DELIVERABLES

  • Prototyping & Lab Support: Assist in the assembly or physical testing of mechanical prototypes to validate design updates.
  • Process Optimization: Identification of improvements for existing accessory designs to reduce assembly time or material costs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with preference for students in their junior year or above.
  • CAD Proficiency: Strong foundational skills in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, OnShape, or similar).
  • Standards Knowledge: Basic understanding of drafting standards, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and tolerance analysis.
  • Technical Writing: Ability to document technical changes clearly and concisely for manufacturing and quality teams.
  • Problem Solving: Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Collaboration: Eagerness to learn the Echodyne design process and work effectively within a fast-paced hardware engineering environment.

Echodyne’s technology is export controlled by the U.S. Government and we must evaluate an applicant’s eligibility to handle export-controlled information or obtain required Government authorizations.  Therefore, we will ask you as part of the application process to identify whether you are a U.S. Citizen or green card holder, or have asylum/refugee status in the U.S.
