Gain Real-World Crisis Experience in Behavioral Health

Looking to build hands-on clinical experience in mental health or social work?

BHSN provides critical mental health and crisis services to individuals and families across the North Country. Our Crisis Services team plays a vital role in supporting individuals during urgent behavioral health needs. 

We are offering internship opportunities within our Adult and Children’s Crisis Services programs, where you’ll gain direct exposure to crisis intervention, behavioral health assessments, and multidisciplinary care.

This is a strong opportunity for students pursuing careers in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, or Human Services who want meaningful, resume-building experience in a fast-paced clinical setting.

Important to Know:

  • This is an unpaid internship for educational purposes
  • Interns work under supervision and do not replace staff
  • Schedule is coordinated with your school and program needs

What an Intern can expect at BHSN:

  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Behavioral health assessments and intake processes
  • Exposure to mental health and substance use crises
  • Trauma-informed care practices
  • Collaboration with clinicians and community providers
  • Real-world insight into community-based crisis response

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shadow Crisis Clinicians and Crisis Support Specialists
  • Assist with intake and documentation support (non-clinical)
  • Observe crisis assessments 
  • Support coordination of care and referrals
  • Participate in team meetings and supervision
  • Complete academic-related assignments or projects
  • Willing to work flexible hours corresponding to the needs of the program  
  • Additional duties as assigned. 

Your Skills & Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Human Services, or related program
  • Internship for academic credit strongly preferred
  • Interest in mental health, crisis services, or social services
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Basic computer skills
  • Valid NYS driver’s license and reliable transportation required for local and regional travel.
