Founded in 1977 as the Senior Care Action Network, SCAN began with a simple but radical idea: that older adults deserve to stay healthy and independent. That belief was championed by a group of community activists we still honor today as the “12 Angry Seniors.” Their mission continues to guide everything we do.
Today, SCAN is a nonprofit health organization serving more than 500,000 people across Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington, with over $8 billion in annual revenue. With nearly five decades of experience, we have built a distinctive, values-driven platform dedicated to improving care for older adults.
Our work spans Medicare Advantage, fully integrated care models, primary care, care for the most medically and socially complex populations, and next-generation care delivery models. Across all of this, we are united by a shared commitment: combining compassion with discipline, innovation with stewardship, and growth with integrity.
At SCAN, we believe scale should strengthen—not dilute—our mission. We are building the future of care for older adults, grounded in purpose, accountability, and respect for the people and communities we serve.
The Job
The Medicare Compliance Intern supports the Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug (MAPD) Compliance Program by assisting with regulatory research, oversight activities, documentation support, and tracking/trending efforts related to federal, state, and delegated entity compliance requirements.
This summer only internship is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in healthcare compliance, regulation, audit, or public health. The intern will gain exposure to the regulatory oversight framework used by CMS, California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), and other applicable state regulators, as well as compliance oversight of delegated entities (FDRs).
The role works under the direction of Compliance leadership and supports second line compliance activities, including regulatory analysis, audit readiness support, and cross functional coordination, without engaging in day to day operational execution.
You Will
Regulatory Research & Analysis: Conduct research and summarization of federal and state regulatory requirements applicable to MAPD plans, including CMS guidance, DHCS requirements (as applicable), and other state regulatory expectations; prepare concise written summaries and comparison tables for Compliance leadership.
Tracking & Documentation
Maintain trackers for regulatory requirements, oversight activities, and compliance deliverables (e.g., guidance reviews, evidence requests, attestations, and corrective action tracking), ensuring accuracy, completeness, and audit‑ready documentation standards.
Project Coordination Support: Provide project management support for compliance oversight activities that require coordination with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., meeting notes, action item tracking, timeline monitoring, deliverable follow-ups, and status reporting).
Audit Readiness & Documentation Support: Assist with compilation, organization, and quality checks of audit documentation (e.g., evidence inventories, document indexing, version control, completeness checks) to support readiness for CMS, DHCS, and state regulatory reviews.
Tracking, Trending, and Insights: Support trending and analysis of compliance-related data points (e.g., findings, corrective action tracking, recurring issues, timeliness measures), and draft simple summaries to support compliance reporting and governance materials.
Documentation & Governance Support: Draft, format, and update compliance program artifacts (e.g., trackers, job aids, presentations, meeting agendas/minutes, and internal communications) under supervision, ensuring clarity and audit-ready documentation standards.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with business owners to gather information needed for compliance oversight activities (e.g., attestations, evidence requests, status updates), while maintaining professional, service-oriented communication.
Continuous Improvement Support: Identify opportunities to improve documentation organization, tracker design, process efficiency, and knowledge management; recommend updates to templates/tools that support consistency and audit readiness.
Delegation Oversight Support: Assist the team in tracking oversight activities related to delegated entities (e.g., document reviews, monitoring artifacts, status logs).
Help organize materials supporting delegated compliance monitoring and reporting.
