About The Company
For more than 75 years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has led the movement to safeguard America’s historic places. A privately funded nonprofit organization, we work to protect America's historic sites; tell the full American story; build stronger communities; and invest in preservation's future. Thanks to the passion and dedication of our advocates and supporters, we’re able to protect hundreds of places every year. Help us save places that matter—for ourselves, each other, and our future together. While we encourage constructive discussion, we ask that you conduct yourself in a civil manner and treat others with respect. The National Trust monitors comments and may remove posts that it deems inappropriate.
About the Role

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Shadows-on-the-Teche in New Iberia, Louisiana, is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded nonprofit organization that protects significant places representing our diverse cultural experience by taking direct action and inspiring broad public support.

Situated on the ancestral land of the Atakapas-Ishak and Chitimacha peoples, “The Shadows” is an antebellum home and former site of enslavement. Today, the property is open to the public and the experiences of those who occupied the site, both free and enslaved, are shared through tours and public programming.

From the early 1990s to the late 2000s, The Shadows partnered with Iberia Parish Schools to co-teach high school African American history classes. These classes involved exploring the David Weeks Family Papers, the primary source collection connected to The Shadows, and local African American history, conversations with experts in the field, providing a special guided tour of The Shadows to family and friends based on information learned throughout the class, and a capstone project involving interviewing a relative. The oral histories collected, in some instances, are the only known recording of these individuals and hold information that is vital to telling a more complete local history. The interviews were recorded on cassette tapes, and, as with all legacy media, are in danger of being lost. The Oral Traditions Digitization Intern will process and archive these oral history interviews. This work will include digitizing the audio recordings, running the recording through Rev in order to obtain a transcript of the interview, edit the transcript as needed, and create a catalogue record in Re:discovery Proficio that includes the recording, transcript, and any additional information.

National Trust internships are temporary experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.

For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $4,000 to help offset expenses. The period of the internship would be from approximately June 1 – July 24, for approximately 28 hours per week (some flexibility of schedule available). This is an onsite internship based at Shadows-on-the-Teche in New Iberia, Louisiana.
