About the Role

Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Software Development Intern to support the design and development of web applications for our ophthalmology department. This internship offers hands-on experience in healthcare technology, providing exposure to clinical workflows, security compliance, and cloud platforms. The successful candidate will work closely with our development team to build healthcare solutions whilst gaining valuable experience in a regulated healthcare environment.

 

Key Responsibilities
• Assist in developing and testing web applications for ophthalmology systems under senior developer guidance
• Support the implementation of technical solutions and contribute to coding tasks across the software development lifecycle
• Learn about healthcare regulations and security standards whilst helping implement cybersecurity measures
• Participate in requirements gathering sessions with clinical staff and stakeholders to understand user needs
• Gain exposure to cloud infrastructure on AWS or Healthcare Commercial Cloud (HCC) platforms through guided projects
• Help maintain technical documentation and contribute to development team knowledge sharing
• Participate in code reviews and learn about quality assurance processes and architectural principles
• Research emerging technologies and their potential applications to healthcare systems

 

Essential Requirements
• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
• Basic understanding of software development principles and programming languages
• Interest in web application development and distributed systems
• Willingness to learn about cloud services, particularly AWS or Healthcare Commercial Cloud (HCC) platforms
• Interest in cybersecurity principles and their application in healthcare environments
• Basic knowledge of database concepts and data management
• Understanding of software development methodologies and eagerness to learn best practices
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

 

Desired Qualifications
• Coursework or personal projects involving web development technologies
• Basic familiarity with APIs and modern web frameworks
• Interest in healthcare technology and clinical applications
• Exposure to version control systems (Git) and collaborative development practices
• Knowledge of containerisation concepts (Docker) or willingness to learn
• Previous internship or project experience in software development
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Enthusiasm for learning about healthcare data standards and regulatory compliance
