ABOUT THE ROLE

The Data Center Junior Field Engineer (Apprenticeship) supports operational teams in the day-to-day technical monitoring and continuous improvement of critical data center infrastructure, across the following scopes:

  • Electrical systems (MV/LV distribution, UPS, generators – operational level)
  • Mechanical systems (cooling, HVAC, thermal equipment)
  • BMS & Controls (supervision systems, automation, sensors, alarms)


This is a hands-on, learning-oriented position, designed to progressively build technical skills in mission‑critical environments under close supervision.

The apprentice contributes by:

  • observing and supporting operational activities,
  • collecting and documenting technical data,
  • assisting in analysis and improvement actions.



Key Responsibilities

Operational & Technical Support

  • Support Facility Managers (FM) and Critical Environment Managers (CEM) in the monitoring of electrical, mechanical, and BMS systems.
  • Participate in site inspections and technical walkdowns.
  • Assist in basic analysis of BMS alarms and events.
  • Support first‑level incident response and troubleshooting activities, under supervision.

Electrical / Mechanical / BMS Exposure

  • Learn and understand:
    • Data center electrical architectures (SLD, redundancy, backup systems).
    • Cooling and HVAC systems (chillers, CRAH units, cooling plants, free cooling).
    • BMS and control systems (sensors, automation logic, alarms).
  • Participate in functional tests, periodic inspections, and supervised maintenance activities.

Documentation & Processes

  • Support the update and structuring of technical documentation:
    • Single Line Diagrams (SLD),
    • Operating procedures (SOP / EOP),
    • Equipment inventories,
    • CMMS data and records.
  • Contribute to documentation consistency and standardization across sites.

Projects & Commissioning Exposure

  • Support commissioning, testing, and handover activities for new equipment or data halls.
  • Observe interactions between Construction, Engineering, and Operations teams.
  • Assist in collecting and consolidating technical data after commissioning.

Safety, Environment & IMS

  • Strictly apply Data4 policies related to:
    • Health & Safety
    • Environment
    • Energy management
    • Information security
  • Learn and comply with IMS and ISO standards (9001, 14001, 45001, 50001, 27001).





Education & Profile

Education

  • Student enrolled in an apprenticeship program (Bachelor to Master level) in:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • HVAC / Mechanical Engineering
    • Industrial Maintenance
    • Automation / Electrotechnics
    • Energy Engineering



Technical Skills (Expected / To Be Developed)

  • Basic knowledge of industrial electrical and/or mechanical systems
  • Strong interest in automation, controls, and supervision systems
  • Ability to read basic technical drawings and schematics
  • Good command of standard IT tools (Excel, Office)
  • Strong curiosity and attention to detail



Soft Skills

  • Strong willingness to learn in a technical, operational environment
  • Analytical mindset and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a safety‑critical and process‑driven environment
  • Team spirit and good communication skills
  • Sense of responsibility and compliance with procedures



Languages

  • Fluent English (B2/C1)
  • Additional language at B1 level minimum a plus (French, Spanish, Polish, Italian, German)
