About The Company
Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading institute for applied research in visual computing. Visual computing is image- and model-based information technology and includes computer graphics and computer vision, as well as virtual and augmented reality. In simple terms, the Fraunhofer researchers in Darmstadt, Rostock, and Kiel are turning information into images and extracting information from images. In cooperation with its partners, technical solutions and market-relevant products are created. Prototypes and integrated solutions are developed in accordance with customized requirements. In doing so, Fraunhofer IGD places users at the forefront, providing them with technical solutions to facilitate computer work and make it more efficient. Owing to its numerous innovations, Fraunhofer IGD raises man-machine interaction to a new level. Man is able to work in a more result-oriented and effective way by means of the computer and visual computing developments.
About the Role

WE RESEARCH FOR A HEALTHY WORLD – AND OFFER DIVERSE OPPORTUNITIES.
CHANGE STARTS WITH US.

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, we combine biology and engineering for health, nutrition, sustainable chemistry, the environment, and climate protection. We develop processes, technologies, and products for patient-centered healthcare, a sustainable bioeconomy, and a climate-neutral and resource-efficient circular economy, bringing new solutions successfully to industrial implementation. We conduct research at the Stuttgart, Biberach, Leuna, and Straubing sites and in close collaboration with numerous universities and research institutions at home and abroad.

Fraunhofer IGB in Straubing offers a Bachelors/Master’s thesis opportunity with hands-on experience in catalyst synthesis, operation of catalytic reactors, and analysis of reaction performance. This project provides comprehensive insight into applied catalysis research at the interface of academia and industry, with strong relevance to sustainable chemical processes, energy storage, and industrial catalysis.

Be part of change

  • Your role involves the preparation, characterization, and screening of heterogeneous catalysts for ammonia synthesis.
  • Using reaction engineering principles, you evaluate the performance of heterogeneous catalysts in both batch and continuous-flow reactors.
  • Analytical techniques such as GC, HPLC, and NMR enable you to assess experimental results, and you will present scientific findings orally and in writing.

What you contribute

  • You are studying chemical engineering, chemistry, process engineering, materials science, or a related degree program.
  • Experience in laboratory work, materials synthesis, and reactor operation is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and strong self-motivation.
  • Knowledge of materials characterization and tools such as MATLAB, OriginPro, and ChemCAD would be beneficial.
  • You have strong written and spoken English; knowledge of German is advantageous but not required.

What we offer

  • Cutting-edge research across a wide variety of pioneering flagship projects that advance society, the economy — and yourself.
  • A varied, creative, and interdisciplinary working environment in a friendly team, with the assurance that your colleagues will always be there to support you.
  • Guidance from scientists working on industry-relevant projects and working in a group of students from all over the world.
  • State-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
  • The opportunity to contribute your ideas as part of a strong team and help solve pressing future issues.
  • Campus cafeteria with daily meal options.

For the preparation of the Bachelor's/Master’s thesis, no remuneration is paid. We offer comprehensive supervision and support. Additionally, there is the possibility of concluding a contract as a Research Assistant. Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for student assistants.

This position is available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities. The same applies if they do not meet all the profile requirements due to a disability.
