About The Company
MassDEP serves the Commonwealth by protecting natural resource areas that involve water, land and air. MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. MassDEP enforces environmental laws, provides technical assistance to cities and towns, issues permits and licenses for activities near sensitive resources, inspects contaminated site cleanups, and partners with other federal and state agencies, municipal officials and environmental stakeholders.
About the Role

The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking to hire an intern who will support its Human Rights Division in Central Office Boston. The Data Science Summer intern with the Human Rights Office (HRO) will primarily manage and analyze complaint data from the RL6 system, focusing on extraction, quality control, and report generation for monitoring. The intern will also support the WRCH pilot project and participate in the Data Science Program at DMH (DSPD) to develop research, analytical, and data management skills through weekly assignments and a supervised project.

 

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):                                                                                                             

  • Fulfill requests from HRO staff for extracting complaint records from the RL6 system.

     

  • Contribute compilation of complaint data for regular reporting cycles.
  • Aid in the preparation of data summaries and visualizations as necessary.
  • Support the identification of missing or inconsistent data fields within RL6 records.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for RL6 complaint data fields and associated reporting procedures.
  • Aid with the WRCH Pilot Project upon request.
  • Offer support for basic data analysis activities.
  • Assist in monitoring the implementation of required actions
  • Participate in all weekly DSPD learning sessions.
  • Complete weekly assignments focused on foundational data science principles.
  • Develop and execute a supervised research project centered on data analysis.
  • Prepare for and deliver a presentation on the completed research project at the program's conclusion.

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic proficiency in query languages for QA queries and data validation or willingness to learn.
  • Understanding of data integrity principles and experience with data cleaning.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Tableau, Excel Pivot Tables) or willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to learn incident reporting systems.
  • Strong attention to detail in identifying data errors and inconsistencies.
  • Critical thinking skills to improve data management and reporting.
  • Ability to maintain an up-to-date data dictionary.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams (HR team, Data Analytics team, Community/Inpatient teams
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

 

Period of Service:  May 26, 2026 through September 04, 2026

 

Additional Information:

  • Benefits are unavailable with the exception of sick leave accruals.
  • All employees will be paid on a biweekly basis and must have direct deposit.
  • The salary for this position is $19 an hour.
  • Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Days Off: Saturday and Sunday

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
