JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the MANAGER TITLE, the Drafting Intern supports manufacturing engineering team by executing fundamental drafting and layout tasks for various manufacturing projects in alignment with safety, quality, delivery, and cost (SQDC) standards. This role is responsible for following engineering specifications, utilizing technical software and precision tools to create high-quality technical drawings and project documentation. By maintaining organized project files and accurately reporting task progress, the Drafting Intern ensures consistent workflow and contributes to on-time project completion while developing advanced technical skills through on-the-job training.
KEY RESPONSABILITIES:
- Create and update 2D and 3D drawings using [Software Name].
- Convert engineer sketches and notes into formal digital blueprints.
- Take physical measurements of equipment and floor layouts for accuracy.
- Help create and update parts lists (BOMs) and assembly instructions.
- Keep project files organized and maintain clear version history.
- Give regular status updates to ensure projects stay on schedule.
- Collaborate with the shop floor to see how designs work in real life.
- Learn advanced engineering workflows through hands-on training.
- Participate in team meetings and continuous improvement projects.
- Maintain a high-standard 5S workspace by performing regular housekeeping, clearing scrap material, and organizing tool layouts to support continuous production flow
- Strictly adhere to all safety guidelines and PPE protocols to maintain a secure and compliant work environment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICAITIONS AND SKILLS:
- Pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related STEM field
- A minimum GPA (typically 3.0) is often preferred to demonstrate reliability and technical aptitude.
- Basic experience with industry-standard CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel for project tracking and Word for documentation)
- Strong grasp of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry for calculating dimensions and tolerances.
- Ability to clearly ask questions, receive feedback from engineers, and document design changes.
- A strong "willingness to learn" and adapt to company-specific drafting standards and workflows.
- Capable of managing multiple small tasks and maintaining clean, version-controlled digital file
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to move frequently between the office and the production floor to monitor project progress and assist with engineering tasks. The role requires the ability to stand and walk for significant portions of the shift and the dexterity to use precision measuring tools, hand tools, and computer equipment. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift, push, or move components and project materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
Candidates must possess strong visual focus to inspect mechanical assemblies, verify layout accuracy, and identify potential production issues or defects. Additionally, candidates must be able to communicate effectively with engineers and production staff to troubleshoot problems, even in a loud manufacturing environment. The employee must be able to wear all required PPE, including steel-toed boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection, at all times while on the manufacturing floor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed in a high-volume cabinet manufacturing facility where the employee is regularly exposed to airborne wood dust, finishing agents, adhesives, and loud noise from woodworking machinery. The role requires the ability to navigate a shop floor featuring moving mechanical parts and heavy materials, necessitating the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hearing protection, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
