Hours: 35 hours per week; primarily weekdays for 12 Weeks
Location: 962 Bloor St West and in the community
Supervisor: Executive Administrator/Office Manager
Compensation: $17.60/hour + 4% vacation pay (4% of gross income)

What We Do
Sistering’s programs include a low-barrier 24/7 Drop In, Housing and Case Support, Harm Reduction, Peer Outreach, On the Path to Employment and Spun Studio social enterprise, and individual and systemic advocacy.

Sistering operates on a trauma-informed and relationship-based model and our harm reduction philosophy is a core element of all the work we do: we are here to respond to participants’ needs, where they are at, in the moment, to support participants to learn how to reduce harm and/or increase safety. In addition, we recognize that their lives have meaning and value.
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a motivated and reliable Student Apprentice, Building Handy Person to join our facilities and maintenance team. This entry-level role provides hands-on experience in general building maintenance and repair, supporting a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for staff and participants. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, dependable, and comfortable with physical work.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with general maintenance and minor repairs, including plumbing fixtures (e.g., unclogging sinks, fixing leaks), basic electrical tasks (e.g., replacing light bulbs/fixtures), and minor carpentry and painting
- Support skilled tradespersons (e.g., electricians, plumbers, carpenters) on more complex maintenance and repair projects
- Perform routine inspections of building systems and equipment to identify maintenance needs
- Assist with preventative maintenance tasks such as changing HVAC filters and basic equipment upkeep
- Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, including proper use of tools and handling of materials
- Help maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment, including organizing storage areas
- Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies as required
- Respond to maintenance requests and document work completed
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with staff, participants, and external contractors
Other Duties as Assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Currently enrolled in a high school or post-secondary program (e.g., skilled trades, construction, facilities maintenance, or related field)
• Mechanically inclined with the ability to safely use basic hand and power tools
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, or carpentry is an asset
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
• Valid driver’s license is an asset
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice
ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for this position, applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the position
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position works in the office and community. Sistering is a 24/7 operation, fast paced, intense environment. There may be the risk of exposure to potentially unpredictable behaviours and situations. Sistering is a pet friendly facility and as such, employees can expect to be in the proximity of animals.
