Our award-winning culture embraces a bold vision of where technology can take us and a passion for tackling challenging problems with industry-first solutions. We believe that when people feel a sense of belonging, they can be more creative, innovative, and thrive at all points in their careers.

Modern 5G and 6G networks are reshaping how devices, services, and infrastructure communicate at scale. Research and validation of these technologies increasingly relies on flexible, software-defined environments capable of rapidly deploying complex network scenarios. At the same time, the security implications of these next-generation networks demand rigorous, automated assessment frameworks aligned with evolving industry standards.

Given this scenario, this work is centered around a micro cloud infrastructure purpose-built for 5G and 6G experimentation, where virtual machines are deployed on demand to support a wide range of use cases and security research scenarios. The intern will play a dual role: keeping this infrastructure running smoothly for its users, and actively contributing to the R&D effort of designing and automating new cybersecurity test cases on top of it.

Responsibilities

We are looking for an intern who will take ownership of a micro cloud infrastructure that enables one-touch deployment of virtual environments for 5G/6G research and cybersecurity experimentation. Day-to-day, this means:

  • Infrastructure management — maintaining and monitoring the cloud environment, ensuring availability and reliability of deployed VMs and services.
  • User support — onboarding users, managing access controls, and troubleshooting deployment issues so researchers can focus on their experiments.
  • Testbed development — designing and deploying new cybersecurity testbeds within the infrastructure, tailored to specific 5G/6G use cases and threat scenarios.
  • R&D contributions — proposing and implementing automated (and semi-automated) security test cases, grounded in relevant standards and frameworks (e.g. NIST, ETSI, 3GPP security specs).
  • Continuous learning — ramping up on both open-source tools (Open5GS, srsRAN, Nmap, Ettercap, etc.) and Keysight proprietary platforms (IoT Security Assessment, CyPerf, BreakingPoint, LoadCore) to effectively contribute across all workstreams.

You will have access to our state-of-the-art laboratory at Keysight Technology, including real 5G/6G equipment and cloud resources, to make this project a reality!

Qualifications

  • You are studying towards a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related area.
  • You have foundational knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, virtualization, etc.) and are comfortable working with cloud or virtualized environments.
  • You understand core communication protocol concepts (handshakes, acknowledgements, packet flow) and have a basic grasp of how 5G/6G architectures differ from previous generations.
  • You are familiar with the main pillars of security (confidentiality, integrity, and availability) and can connect them to real-world network scenarios.
  • It's a plus if:
    • You have experience with infrastructure automation or scripting (Python, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, etc.).
    • You have used version control software (Git, SVN, etc.).
    • You enjoy diagnosing and solving system-level problems.
    • You are comfortable working in Linux environments and with CLI-based tooling.
    • You have participated in Capture the Flag (CTF) events or have hands-on experience with security tools.
    • You have prior exposure to virtualization platforms (e.g. OpenStack, Proxmox, KVM, or similar).
