Candidates will gain firsthand experience working inside of the largest law enforcement agency in Central Texas. Students will be exposed to law enforcement research and data collection, statistical analysis, geospatial analysis, and intelligence operations. Students will be able to tailor their experiences based on their field of study at their respective colleges and universities.


 

Job Description:

Undergraduate Intern - Austin Police Department (APD) Data and Analytics Division

Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Observes and assists professionals in the assigned department to learn about areas of career interest.

  • Assists, as necessary, in the coordination, administration, or monitoring of specific programs.

  • Assists, as necessary, with researching, collecting and organizing data, performing analyses, and preparing reports to supplement knowledge gained through academic courses.

  • Participates, as necessary, in finding solutions to existing problems and discusses recommendations with administrative personnel to acquire skills in problem solving.

  • Assists with special projects.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances.

  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.

  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to create clear and concise reports.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university undergraduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to travel to different work locations


 

Notes to Candidate:

The Austin Police Department (APD) Data and Analytics Division is launching an internship program that is designed to provide comprehensive exposure of APD operations to candidates who are enrolled in university. The program seeks to provide interns with experience in working in a fast-paced law enforcement environment and utilizing data analytics to drive business operations. Interns will engage weekly on utilizing statistical methods as part of a diverse team of researchers and analysts. As interns with the APD Data and Analytics Division, their primary focus will be related to data collection and analysis to support ongoing department initiatives. Our goal is to provide each intern with a broad range of unique opportunities to meet and work with APD employees from around the department.

The internship program will take place between the months of June - September of 2026 (depending on the end of the applicant’s summer semester and the beginning of their fall semester). Interns will be required to attend a minimum of 12 hours per week and commit to a total of at least 150 hours over the summer semester to successfully complete the internship. This internship is 100% in-person and not eligible for remote work. Interns will be expected to maintain a flexible schedule during normal business hours that aligns with department operational needs.

Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions. Secondary Employment:

Travel:
If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
