Position Overview:

The MP Materials Internship provides students and early-career technicians with the opportunity to work alongside experienced maintenance professionals and engineers supporting rare earth magnet manufacturing operations. Participants will gain hands-on exposure to industrial maintenance practices including equipment inspections, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and facility support.

The Maintenance Technician Intern will support the Facilities & Maintenance team in maintaining production equipment, utilities, and facility systems. This role provides practical experience in industrial maintenance within a manufacturing environment and offers exposure to rotating equipment, electrical systems, instrumentation, and facility infrastructure. Interns will work alongside skilled technicians and supervisors to support maintenance activities that ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist maintenance technicians with preventative maintenance activities on production and facility equipment.
  • Support routine inspections of equipment such as pumps, motors, compressors, HVAC systems, and utility equipment.
  • Assist in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation issues under the guidance of experienced technicians.
  • Learn to interpret equipment drawings, maintenance procedures, and work instructions.
  • Support work order execution within the Computerized Maintenance Management System CMMS.
  • Assist with equipment cleaning, lubrication, and basic mechanical tasks.
  • Observe and learn safe lockout/tagout (LOTO) practices and other industrial safety procedures.
  • Help maintain organized work areas, tools, and maintenance documentation.
  • Participate in maintenance team meetings and safety discussions.
  • Complete additional assignments and projects as directed by maintenance leadership.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a technical program in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Interest in industrial manufacturing, mechanical systems, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to follow written instructions, procedures, and maintenance checklists.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to enter work order information electronically.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, overtime, Nights, or weekends as required.

Desired Qualities:

  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude and interest in troubleshooting equipment.
  • Exposure to industrial maintenance, shop work, or technical training programs.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technicians, engineers, and supervisors.
