About the Role

Description

Summary/Position Objectives:

The Population Health Data Analytics Summer Intern will support the Population Health Department in advancing data-driven strategies that improve health outcomes, reduce disparities, and inform programmatic decision-making. This internship provides hands-on experience working with real-word health care and social determinants of health (SDoH) data in a managed care Medicaid population health setting. The intern will collaborate closely with the Population Health leadership, data analytics team and managers to collect, interpret and translate data into actional insights to identify member needs focused on subpopulations, health disparities; opportunities for improvements in current/future program and community base organization network development.


By the end of the summer the intern will:

  • Gain an understanding of how Medicaid managed care organizations reviews and analyze data to address social needs and improve population health outcomes. 
  • Collect and analyze population-level and programmatic data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities related to social needs (e.g., housing, food, transportation). 
  • Develop skills in translating social care and population health data into actionable insights for population health segmentation and strategy.
  • Strengthen professional competencies in health equity, population health analytics, and community partnership strategy.

What You'll Do: 

  • Work with the population health director and the analytics team to prepare the population health assessment. 
  • Support the community-based organization manager to identify ways to develop the CBO network.
  • Work with data analytics and health education specialists to develop methodology for health education effectiveness.
  • Work with the data analytics and health educators to review community schools data to develop future health education programming.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with the population health teams.
  • Ensure communication activities are based on principles, methods, and best practices. 
  • Complete assigned tasks within established timeframes.
  • Attend internal and external meetings as requested.
  • Manage project work, as needed, including quality assurance and deliverable compliance.

Secondary Functions:

  • Work from home position. 
  • Observe confidentiality of health records in accordance with MPC policies and procedures.

Requirements

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; solid analytical and organization skills; and foundation project management abilities.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, professionalism, and sound judgment with ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of team. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data visualization or analytics tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, R) is a plus.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Current undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor’s in health-related field (e.g. public health, medicine, community health, health informatics) or community health or services.
  • Course completion in health-related and data analysis relevant coursework.
  • Prior academic or work experience in public health, community-based care, health or social services preferred.
