About the Role

Accounts Payable Internship

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a student intern to work in their Financial Accounting department.  During this internship, we will be providing insight to the inner workings of the high performing accounts payable team and offer a unique opportunity for college students to learn about the different facets available in an Accounts Payable Technician profession.  The learning experiences acquired while working side by side Accounts Payable professionals offers a well-balanced introduction into our industry and to our business.    
An Accounting Accounts Payable Technician Internship offers the following learning opportunities:

  • Training and hands on experience in processing, applying appropriate policies and best practices
  • Adjusting to multiple and changing priorities, flexibility
  • Produce quality, accurate, prompt, and reliable results reported in a clear concise manner
  • Build skills to identify discrepancies and errors and anticipate customer needs

In this position, the Intern will learn different suites of tools, such as our accounting software (Lawson), our work management system (Maximo) and the variety of software that comes with Microsoft. The Intern will also learn to work with the accounts payable team on industry best-practices, common issues, and use critical thinking skills to work through different scenarios and potential solutions.  

Distribution of Projects and Time:

  • Processing payables:  50% - Support team members by entering, receiving, reviewing, and processing invoices
  • Solutions: 15% - Support team by identifying, reviewing, and managing solutions to simple issues, escalating larger or more complex issues to the team
  • Reconciliation:  15% - Support team members by developing and reviewing reconciliation reports and vendor statements
  • Record retention and administration:  20% - Assisting and supporting the team with record management and documentation support and opening and distributing mail

This internship position requires 30-40 as-needed work hours/week during the summer from June 8th through August 14th; if business necessitates and budget is available, we may extend this internship into the school year - maximum of 20 hours during school. Additionally, we can be flexible to support a student’s school schedule. 

*This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position 
*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc. 
*Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) and be able to provide documentation if requested.  Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
-  Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (1/3 of the time), and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary only if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other criteria are met.
-  Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.
