Position: Citywide Intern
Location: City of Balch Springs
Department: Various Departments
Hourly Rate: $20.00/hour

Work Schedule: Part-time | Flexible schedule | Up to 19.5 hours per week
Maximum Internship Hours: 160 Hours

Internship Dates: June 8, 2026 – July 31, 2026

About the Internship:

The City of Balch Springs Citywide Internship Program provides students and recent graduates with practical, hands-on experience in municipal government operations and public service. Interns will support departmental operations, strategic initiatives, community programs, research efforts, and administrative functions while gaining exposure to the day-to-day operations of local government.

This position is designed to provide professional development opportunities, encourage civic engagement, and create exposure to career pathways within public administration and municipal operations. Interns will work alongside City leadership and staff while contributing to projects and initiatives that support organizational goals and community enhancement.

Intern assignments may vary based on organizational needs, educational background, career interests, and departmental priorities.

Interns may be placed in various departments based on interests, qualifications, and organizational needs, including:

  • Human Resources
  • Planning & Zoning
  • Community Experience (Library, Rec and Senior)
  • Business and Capital 
  • Court
  • Marketing 
  • General intern (assignment may be cross departmental)

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The following duties are representative of the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

  • Assist departments with operational projects, research, and administrative initiatives
  • Conduct research, gather data, and assist with analysis and reporting
  • Prepare presentations, spreadsheets, reports, summaries, and related materials
  • Support community events, outreach activities, and organizational programs
  • Assist with customer service and public interaction activities as assigned
  • Attend meetings, trainings, workshops, and site visits to gain exposure to municipal operations
  • Collaborate with City staff on assigned projects and departmental priorities
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while handling City information and operations
  • Perform general administrative support duties including filing, organizing documents, scheduling, and data entry
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of departmental and organizational objectives

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer applications

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work is primarily performed in an office or municipal facility environment with occasional travel to various City facilities, meetings, events, or field locations. 
  • Duties may require prolonged sitting, standing, walking, lifting light office materials, and operating standard office equipment.
