Compensation
In years when grant or program funding is available, interns may be compensated at a rate of $19.57 an hour to $22.30 for hours completed as part of the field placement. Compensation is not guaranteed and is contingent upon funding availability.

Position Overview
This 400-hour Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) field placement offers hands-on experience in school-based and community social work practice. The intern will engage in group work, youth programming, domestic violence prevention, and community outreach initiatives designed to support the social, emotional, and academic well-being of children and adolescents. The placement emphasizes skill development in direct practice, prevention education, and collaboration within diverse school and community environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Group Work Facilitation
  • Co-facilitate psychoeducational and support groups for students (e.g., social skills, emotional regulation, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, peer relationships).
  • Integrate topics such as boundaries, consent, and recognizing unhealthy or abusive dynamics into group curricula.
  • Assist in curriculum development and adapt group content to meet developmental and cultural needs.
  • Observe group dynamics and contribute to evaluations of group effectiveness.
  • Practice trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches in all group settings.
2. Youth Programming
  • Support the design and implementation of youth-focused programs within schools and community spaces (e.g., after-school programs, summer enrichment, leadership development).
  • Incorporate domestic violence prevention and healthy relationship education into youth programming.
  • Engage youth in structured activities that promote resilience, identity development, and positive peer interaction.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and community partners to align programming with student needs.
  • Track attendance, participation, and outcomes of youth programs.
3. Domestic Violence Prevention & Education
  • Assist in delivering age-appropriate prevention education on topics such as healthy relationships, dating violence, consent, and bystander intervention.
  • Support awareness campaigns (e.g., Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, school-based initiatives).
  • Collaborate with local domestic violence agencies and community partners to provide resources and referrals.
  • Help develop educational materials, workshops, and presentations for students and families.
  • Maintain sensitivity and confidentiality when working with individuals impacted by violence.
4. Community Engagement & Outreach
  • Participate in community outreach efforts to connect students and families with local resources and services, including domestic violence support services.
  • Attend community meetings, school events, and partnership-building activities.
  • Assist in organizing workshops or events for families (e.g., mental health awareness, parenting support, violence prevention, resource fairs).
  • Advocate for equitable access to services and culturally responsive programming.
5. Individual Student Support (Limited Scope)
  • Shadow and assist with student check-ins under supervision.
  • Help identify student needs, including safety concerns, and connect them with appropriate school or community resources.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries, mandated reporting responsibilities, and confidentiality in all interactions.
6. Documentation & Professional Development
  • Complete required documentation, including process recordings, case notes, and reflection logs.
  • Participate in weekly supervision sessions and actively integrate feedback.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities, including trainings related to trauma, violence prevention, and youth development.
  • Demonstrate ethical practice aligned with the NASW Code of Ethics.
Qualifications
  • Enrollment in an accredited BSW program with eligibility for field placement.
  • Strong interest in working with children, adolescents, and families.
  • Interest in violence prevention, healthy relationships education, and community-based practice.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Commitment to social justice, equity, and ethical practice.
Work Environment
The intern will split time between school settings (elementary, middle, or high school) and community-based environments such as youth centers, nonprofit organizations, or outreach events. Some evening or occasional weekend hours may be required for community programming and prevention events.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated through supervision, competency-based assessments, and completion of required academic and agency deliverables. Emphasis will be placed on growth, professionalism, ethical practice, and integration of prevention and intervention skills in working with youth and communities.
This placement provides a comprehensive, prevention-focused learning experience that prepares BSW students for generalist practice, with particular emphasis on youth development, community engagement, and domestic violence prevention.
