Under direct supervision, the Audiology Extern will perform various tasks for the audiology department that will prepare them for a career in audiology. The Audiology Extern will be assigned progressive responsibilities for each subsequent quarter of the year. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

A Brief Overview
Under direct supervision, the Audiology Extern will perform various tasks for the audiology department that will prepare them for a career in audiology. The Audiology Extern will be assigned progressive responsibilities for each subsequent quarter of the year. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Administers diagnostic tests to evaluate hearing to establish a basis for patient treatment.
  • Develops, implements, and measures effectiveness of individualized treatment programs for patients requiring aural rehabilitation.
  • Assists with cleaning and stocking the clinic and maintaining inventory.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Required - Currently enrolled in a college program Audiology

Work Experience Requirements
  • Preferred - No prior work experience

Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • Required - Audiology Clinical Externship - Tennessee Board of Communications Disorders and Sciences

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to utilize audiology testing equipment and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Ability to learn to identify when equipment may be in disrepair.
  • Ability to assess a situation and seek guidance from a supervisor.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to access and review the scheduler, charts in EPIC, and Outlook email. Ability to learn manufacturer software for hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this job.

Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
