Cabell Huntington Hospital is now accepting applications for Nurse Extern positions—an excellent opportunity for nursing students to gain hands-on clinical experience and work alongside experienced Registered Nurses in a supportive learning environment.


Application Periods

  • January Start – Applications open November 1

  • May Start – Applications open March 1


Eligibility

  • ASN students who have completed the first semester of their program

  • BSN students who have completed the first semester of their sophomore year


Program Structure

Weekly Hours:

  • 12 hours/week is ideal.  Flexible scheduling and hours 

Extern I – Entry Level

  • Float experience across multiple units:

    • Medical-Surgical

    • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

    • Emergency Room (ER)

    • Pediatrics

    • Mother/Baby

Extern II – Advanced Level

  • For students entering the final year of their nursing program

  • Unit-based placements in:

    • Med-Surg

    • ICU

    • ER

    • Women’s and Children’s units

  • Externs may shadow an RN and perform skills under supervision

Role Overview

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and in accordance with hospital and nursing policies, the Nurse Extern supports patient care by performing routine clinical tasks aligned with their level of training and experience.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (sophomore level or higher)

  • CPR certification required

  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with patients and staff
