About the Role

Aviary Internship 

The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium 

  

The Toledo Zoo is currently seeking an Aviary Intern to assist our Birds Department.  This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to the care, welfare, training, and maintenance of animals and exhibits under the supervision of the Bird Department, including the Nancy L. and Martin Davidson Barnyard.  Responsibilities for this role involve preparing and distributing appropriate diets, cleaning animal cages, exhibits, and some public areas.

 

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act with scheduled work hours not exceeding 40 hours per work week. 


Essential Job Functions: Duties will include, but are not limited to monitoring and reporting on the following

  • Maintaining high standards of animal care through preparation and distribution of appropriate diets, animal observation, record keeping, area maintenance and cleaning of animal areas/ some public areas 
  • Participating in guest engagement activities including talks and tours 
  • Actively supporting and implementing department policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care of the collection and the safety of staff and visitors 
  • Participating in collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education 
  • Maintaining a positive attitude, while communicating and collaborating with team members 

 

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Experience with animal husbandry preferred, or an equivalent combination of education/experience that provides the required knowledge and skills. 
  • FFA & 4-H experience a plus! 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo fleet insurance carrier. 
  • Must be willing to receive the necessary inoculations needed to work in the department. 
  • Work schedules include weekdays, weekends, and can include holidays
