About the Role

Toray Advanced Composites (TAC) is a leading supplier of advanced composite materials for aerospace, sporting goods, motorsport, and industrial markets. You will find our thermoset composite products on nearly every satellite, space launch vehicle, unmanned aircraft, military and commercial aircraft in production today. TAC also provides composites materials to industrial and recreational applications including mountain bikes, medical prosthetics, and sports equipment.

Our thermoplastic prepregs, known in the industry as Cetex®, are found in a wide range of commercial and military aircraft, including large wing structures and interior applications like seats and galleys. Our Cetex products are available in unidirectional tape or fabric form in a variety of engineered thermoplastic resins including PAEK, PEKK, PEEK, PPS, PEI as well as a full line of performance thermoplastics including Nylon, PET, PC/ABS, HDPE, and PP.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:

The Controls Engineering Intern will support the Maintenance, Process Engineering and Process Technology team in continuous process improvement, data digitalization and operational efficiency within a manufacturing environment.

The intern will assist with SCADA system design and implementation, data analysis, documentation, PLC/IO troubleshooting activities, and continuous improvement initiatives while gaining hands-on experience with industrial equipment and maintenance management systems.

The role provides exposure to factory digitalization, good manufacturing processes (GMP), maintenance engineering practices, reliability engineering principles and industry standards related to safety, quality and operational excellence.

The intern will gain experience in:

  • Industrial equipment maintenance

  • Preventive and predictive maintenance strategies
  • Root cause analysis methods
  • Ignition SCADA systems
  • Machine network infrastructure design and sustainability
  • Manufacturing operational environments

MAJOR DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • SCADA (supervisory, control and data acquisition) system implementation and management of manufacturing process data
  • Support development of dashboards and reports for process improvement and database management
  • Assist in identifying trends and recommending improvements on an end-device PLC/sensor level

Documentation and Process Improvement

  • Assist in drafting and maintaining technical documentation including:
    • Machine network structure schematics
    • Manufacturing controls revision logs
    • Process monitoring and data display diagrams for SCADA design
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) & Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) operations
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) and engineering documentation updates
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects to increase equipment uptime and efficiency

Maintenance & Reliability Support

  • Assist department engineers and technicians in analyzing equipment downtime and identifying root causes
  • Participate in equipment inspections and maintenance troubleshooting activities
  • Assist with reliability improvement initiatives for critical production equipment

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with maintenance technicians, process engineers and production teams to support daily operations
  • Participate in equipment troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Assist in project work related to equipment upgrades or facility improvements

Safety & Quality Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures
  • Support maintenance activities aligned with AS9100 quality management systems
  • Ensure documentation and maintenance records are accurate and compliant

EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field in an accredited program
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical systems
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and schematics
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel or data analysis tools
  • Ability to create structured, report-style documents using Microsoft Word
  • Interest in manufacturing or industrial maintenance environments
  • Strong problem solving and analytical thinking
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Effective communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn and develop technical skills

Preferred skills

  • Experience with PLC systems or industrial automation devices (sensor integration, closed-loop feedback systems, etc)
  • Experience with SQU or databased management systems 
  • Experience with Python, C++ or Java 
  • Experience with creating data dashboards via HMIs (human machine interfaces) or SCADA systems or html-based interface
  • Experience with creating technical documentation on CAD software such as AutoCAD
  • Ability to evaluate electrical components and equipment using measurement instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, and other electrical test devices
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma concepts
  • Exposure to PLC systems or industrial automation

Pay rate:  $25 - $32/hr
