Who you are:
The CIEE Business and Marketing Internship is a unique opportunity to live and work abroad while contributing to CIEE’s business and marketing initiatives and on-site operations. Interns gain a comprehensive perspective on what it takes to operate a successful, high quality study abroad program and receive hands-on experience in the business, marketing, student engagement, and Center operations, all while developing as young professionals and making a meaningful impact across the organization.
CIEE Business and Marketing Interns are placed at one of CIEE’s 45 international Centers around the globe and support a range of business, sales, marketing, and student engagement initiatives, in addition to select administrative and student life activities.
This role operates within a matrix reporting structure, with interns officially reporting to the Director of College Study Abroad Initiatives as well as the local CIEE Center staff. Approximately 70% of the internship focuses on business, on-site promotion, marketing, and strategic initiatives, while the remaining 30% supports Center operations and student life programming.
What You’ll Do:
Business, Sales, and Marketing Activities (≈70%)
Key responsibilities include on-site promotion of CIEE’s Refer-a-Friend (RAF) program, storytelling and content asset collection, ambassador engagement, and support of additional initiatives, including the Community Impact Initiative.
- Refer a Fried (RAF) program:
- Create lifelong CIEE champions by proactively promoting the Refer-a-Friend (RAF) program on site and serving as the primary resource for full student participation and engagement.
- Design 3 RAF events with the goal of activating students to start referring immediately.
- Encourage broad participation across programs.
- Creatively problem-solve and adapt strategies to effectively reach goals.
- Coordinate with local staff on event set up and execution.
- Lead RAF presentations and tabling events.
- Content Creation and Asset Collection:
- Create weekly, high-quality social media content aligned with CIEE’s strategic content calendar (blogs, reels, posts, and short-form video).
- Demonstrate strong editing and visual storytelling skills with extreme attention to detail.
- Capture authentic, real-time study abroad student testimonials, producing written and video content for multiple platforms.
- Align with CIEE’s brand on all content.
- Highlight daily life abroad and key CIEE initiatives through compelling narratives and visuals.
- Assist with marketing collateral development and brand audits.
- Support the creation, display, and evaluation of marketing materials and messaging.
- Collaborate with peer interns globally and with CIEE’s central marketing team.
- Ambassador Programs:
- Recruit, support, and engage on-site College Abroad Ambassadors.
- Assist in identifying and cultivating future Campus Ambassadors.
- Lead Ambassador presentations.
- Center Visits:
- Coordinate and support CIEE Open Houses, partner visits, and events as needed.
- Community Impact Initiative:
- Support the coordination and asset collection of this initiative.
- Support Center staff as necessary.
- Additional Projects:
- Work closely with CIEE staff on other initiatives.
- Potential travel to another CIEE location to host RAF events or gather marketing content may be requested.
- Interns will have the unique opportunity to work on a Capstone Project tied to a strategic CIEE initiative and further mentored by other CIEE staff.
Administrative and On-Site Operational Support (≈30%)
Interns also contribute to daily Center operations and student engagement initiatives, working alongside experienced local staff.
- Assisting with the planning and delivery of local cultural and social activities
- Participating in cultural programming with CIEE students
- Supporting administrative teams with basic office and operational tasks
- Serving as reception coverage during designated times
- Completing additional operational responsibilities as needed (varies by location)
CIEE Intern Assignments and Locations:
Strong preference to applicants who have previously studied abroad in one of the offered locations, as prior experience and familiarity with the local student experience are considered crucial to the role. In select cases, additional consideration may be given based on relevant professional experience. Final placements are determined by the CIEE hiring team based on candidate skill sets, background, and overall fit for each location.
Needed Equipment and Requirements
Interns must bring their own laptops and working phone. CIEE will not pay for a phone plan overseas.

- Europe: Barcelona, Berlin, Florence, Lisbon, Madrid, Prague, Paris, Seville, Rome
- Pacific Rim: Sydney, Tokyo, Kyoto
- Africa and Middle-East: Cape Town
- Latin America: Buenos Aires
What you’ll bring:
Eligibility:- College graduate or soon to be graduate with a degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field.
- U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the United States.
- Valid U.S. passport.
- Applicants must be able to remain in their assigned region for the full duration of the program (12 weeks) and must not have exceeded any applicable stay limitations prior to arrival. For some regions, this may include restrictions such as the Schengen 90/180-day rule. Entry requirements vary by country and region, and applicants are strongly encouraged to review the permitted duration of stay for U.S. citizens in their preferred locations.
- Must be able to purchase their own round-trip airfare to and from the internship site. Interns are responsible for any ticket changes and associated costs.
Ideal Candidates:
- Outgoing and extroverted with strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Previous study abroad experience in the placement location.
- Academic or professional background in business, marketing, communications, or related fields.
- Proven promotional experience, leadership, or campus involvement.
- Strong storytelling abilities, including writing, content creation, and/or graphic design.
- Experience with social and digital media marketing.
- Photography experience.
- Alumni of a study abroad program preferred.
