About the Role

John Howard Society Kingston & District has an opportunity for a summer student position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program. This position will work with the staff at 125 Stewart Blvd in Brockville, assisting with the program, including providing community resources, and responding and supporting clients with services and initiatives that support reintegration. The duration of work will be a total of 8 weeks and 35 hours/week for a total of 280 hours. Must qualify for the Canada Summer Jobs Program, be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old and be a Canadian citizen.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support delivery in youth programming, cabins, and bail supervision.
  • Supporting clients with housing search, harm reduction supply, and basic needs distribution
  • Respond to the needs of clients and coordinate required services and initiatives that support reintegration
  • Participate in public education on the role of the John Howard Society and  the programs available
  • Work closely with the Case manager to support the clients in reintegration measures
  • Liaise with other agencies, organizations and groups and attend community meetings/ events related to criminal justice, reintegration and rehabilitation, homelessness
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with community agencies and other service providers
  • Advocate for clients and manage any problems, issues or complaints that may arise from clients or staff
  • Promote the development of more effective services through new initiatives or service improvements/enhancements
  • Assist in the collection of statistics and reports
  • Accompany staff when transporting clients to appointments
  • Demonstrate pleasant and professional mannerisms, punctuality, reliability and ensure confidentiality at all times
  • All other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • A degree or diploma in the social sciences field or working towards;
  • Specific education, training or certification in community corrections is an asset
  • Work related experience in corrections, residential housing programs, homelessness and mental health
  • Experience with conflict resolution, motivational and counselling techniques
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office suite, databases and the internet
  • Familiar with community resources and services
  • A valid Full G drivers’ license and reliable personal vehicle
  • A satisfactory Criminal Police Check, Enhanced Reliability Clearance (CSC) an asset
  • Required to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • This is a single staffed facility for males in conflict with the law
