About the Role

Position Title: Advocacy Intern 

Hours: Part-time internship, approximately 10 - 16 hours per week. This is a hybrid opportunity, with opportunities to attend in-person meetings and events in Boston. Flexible scheduling based on academic calendar.

Duration: Fall 2026 or preferably the full academic year

The Advocacy Department at EMPath works with participants, staff, and coalition partners to address the root causes of the barriers facing our clients and advance broader policy changes to benefit low-income women and families in Massachusetts and beyond.


Intern responsibilities will include:

  • Plan and participate in advocacy events/trainings, including our consumer group meetings, as well as strategy meetings with Coalition partners
  • Help with engagement and recruitment for our consumer group and story sharing network as needed
  • Conduct light research and prepare testimony and factsheets to support advocacy efforts
  • Assist with correspondence to statewide partners and legislative offices
  • Assist with mailings, bill and budget tracking, outreach calls and general administrative tasks
  • Other projects as assigned


Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Candidates should be interested in learning more about public policy, economic issues, and laws impacting low-income women and their families.
  • Excellent research and written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
  • Experience directly working with population a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet.
  • Travel to sites throughout Greater Boston on occasion; use of a car is not required.
  • Flexible, sense of humor a plus.
  • Lived experience with poverty a plus.

Though this is an unpaid internship, it offers meaningful opportunities to apply public policy and advocacy knowledge, develop skills, and gain hands-on nonprofit experience. Eligible students may earn college credit through their academic institution.
