Job Description:

Position Summary

The Summer Research Assistant will participate in an immersive clinical and translational research experience within the Musculoskeletal Infection (MSI) Program. This role integrates laboratory investigation, preclinical modeling, and clinical observational learning, providing exposure to the full spectrum of physician-scientist work in pediatric orthopaedics.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Observation

  • Shadow attending physician during daily MSI case review with residents and Advanced Practice Providers
  • Participate in inpatient rounding on musculoskeletal infection consults
  • Observe MRI workflow, including sedated and non-sedated advanced imaging studies
  • Observe operative management of pediatric musculoskeletal infections
  • Attend outpatient clinics (Monday and Thursday mornings)
  • Participate in weekly MSI Team Meeting (Mondays at 11:00 AM)

Laboratory Research

  • Assist with basic and translational research activities under supervision
  • Learn and perform foundational laboratory techniques, including:
    • Bacterial culture and growth processes
    • RNA isolation and preparation for sequencing workflows
    • Tissue processing and histologic analysis (in collaboration with DTR Labs)
  • Assist with focused ultrasound (FUS) experimental workflows
  • Observe and assist in 7T MRI imaging of preclinical models

Preclinical Research & Compliance

  • Participate in murine model workflows under supervision
  • Assist with basic animal handling, monitoring, and documentation
  • Complete required training (IACUC, biosafety, laboratory safety)
  • Adhere to institutional and federal guidelines for ethical research

Academic Development

  • Review key scientific publications related to pediatric MSI
  • Participate in research discussions and team meetings
  • Assist with data organization, literature review, and potential scholarly output
  • Engage in structured mentorship, including exposure to genomics research (UTSW Genomics Core)

Professional Development

  • Participate in mentorship focused on careers in medicine and biomedical research
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and HIPAA compliance
  • Develop understanding of translational research from bench to bedside

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student (preferred: biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field)
  • Strong academic performance and demonstrated interest in biomedical research
  • Prior laboratory or research experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
