Summer New Grad Internship - Interactive Design Intern - Paid
Scarab Digital | UI Design Intern | Vancouver-based film and television productions
A paid summer internship for a new graduate with a natural eye for design, original portfolio work, and an interest in creating believable interactive screen interfaces for film and TV.
The Short Version
• Title: UI Design Intern
• Dates: June 1- Aug 28, possible contract position afterwards
• Pay: $18 - 25/hr, 40 hours a week, 13 weeks
• This is a paid summer new grad internship focused on interactive and moving UI design mockups for phones, tablets, and computers.
• We are looking for strong visual taste, original design work, coachability, and a natural instinct for believable screen interfaces.
What We Do
Scarab Digital builds story-driven on-screen graphics for film and television: phones, text conversations, social interfaces, laptop screens, websites, search results, dashboards, surveillance visuals, broadcast graphics, medical screens, radar systems, and speculative UI/FUI.
These graphics are not decorative. They need to read instantly on screen, feel native to the world of the story, and help move the narrative forward.
The Role
We are looking for someone with a natural eye for design who we can mentor to create interactive and moving UI design mockups for phones, tablets and computers inside the worlds of film and tv productions in Vancouver.
While a natural gift in creating believable user interfaces is a must, we’re willing to train the right candidate on motion (After Effects) and interaction design (Protopie). Any existing experience with those things is a massive plus.
This internship is built for a new graduate who wants to learn how strong visual design translates into production-ready screen graphics. You do not need to arrive knowing every tool perfectly, but you do need to show strong taste, originality, curiosity, and the ability to improve quickly through feedback.
What You Will Learn and Support
• Create UI design mockups for phones, tablets, computers, websites, apps, and story-specific screen moments.
• Support the design of screen graphics that feel believable inside film and television worlds.
• Learn how to think about readability, visual hierarchy, typography, timing, and production context.
• Work from references, notes, and creative direction while developing your own design judgment.
• Receive mentorship on motion in After Effects and interaction design in ProtoPie, depending on project needs and your current skill level.
• Practice preparing files clearly so work can be reviewed, revised, animated, or handed off cleanly.
Software Knowledge
• Adobe Illustrator or Figma
• Adobe Photoshop
• Adobe After Effects
• Protopie (bonus)
Portfolio
Portfolio designs should be created entirely by you, without the aid of templates or AI. Feel free to submit school or personal projects, we want to see your best work and understand your eye for design. As we are creating interfaces for film & tv, we’re more interested in stunning visuals than UX breakdowns.
Portfolio submission requirement
The required portfolio pieces must be submitted with the application. Bonus work should also be submitted with the application if available.
Required - must be submitted with the application
• Phone app mockup (ie. messages, social media, dating, etc.)
• Website mockup (ie. news article, forum, online store, etc.)
Bonus - submit with the application if available
• Desktop app mockup (ie. point of sale system, mapping, cctv viewer, etc.)
• Medical device interfaces (ie. vitals, ultrasound, mri, x-ray, etc.)
• FUI / “Fantasy User Interfaces”, (ie. a spaceship controls, mapping, comms, etc.)
• Gaming interfaces (ie. pause screen, in-game overlay, etc.)
You Will Do Your Best Work Here If You...
• have a strong natural eye for believable interface design.
• are curious, coachable, and serious about getting better fast.
• care about stunning visuals, typography, hierarchy, composition, and screen readability.
• can hear feedback, apply it quickly, and stay open while the work improves.
• are excited by film and television, and by the idea of designing screens that live inside a story world.
• take ownership of your portfolio, your learning, and the quality of what you submit.
This Role Is Probably Not a Fit If...
• your portfolio relies on templates, AI-generated work, or projects you cannot fully explain as your own.
• you are mainly interested in UX case studies, research documentation, or product strategy rather than visual interface design for screen.
• you need every creative decision over-prescribed before you can begin.
• you struggle to take feedback or revise quickly.
• you are not excited by the visual language of film, TV, games, or cinematic interface design.
What Strong Candidates Usually Bring
• Typical level: New graduate or summer internship candidate with strong school or personal work.
• Core tools: Adobe Illustrator or Figma, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects.
• Helpful extra: ProtoPie experience or curiosity.
• Strong indicators: Original portfolio work, believable UI instincts, strong visual taste, typography, coachability, and clear ownership of the work submitted.
Application Process
We keep the process focused and respectful of candidate time. Applicants should submit their application materials with the required portfolio pieces included.
• Portfolio + application: We look for originality, visual judgment, strong UI instincts, and whether the candidate understands the type of work this internship supports.
• Required portfolio review: The phone app mockup and website mockup must be submitted with the application.
• Bonus portfolio review: Additional desktop, medical, FUI, or gaming interface work should be included with the application if available.
• Interview: Selected candidates may be invited to discuss their work, design choices, coachability, and interest in film and television screen graphics.
A Note From Us
If you are a new graduate with a strong natural eye for UI design, original work, and the desire to learn how screen interfaces are created for film and television, we would like to see your portfolio. We care about talent, taste, ownership, coachability, and the quality of your eye. We also care that the work you submit is truly yours.
