This position is perfect for a law student (completed first year) who is interested in learning about Oregon workers’ compensation law and administrative law.
This is a part-time position that will be filled using one of the following options:
One employee who works full-time during the summer and the job ends once school starts again in the fall
One employee who works full-time in the summer and then moves to part-time once school starts again in the fall
Two employees who job share and each work 20 hours per week
Please note the job posting displays the full-time salary amount. For part-time schedules the salary will be prorated based on the hours worked and leave accrual and insurance rates will be adjusted proportionally.

The Department of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS) is a progressive business regulatory state agency dedicated to the mission of protecting and serving Oregon's consumers and workers while supporting a positive business climate. The department administers state laws and rules governing workers' compensation, occupational safety and health, financial institutions, insurance companies and building codes. The department has consumer protection and education programs, offices, and ombuds to help consumers, injured workers, and businesses.
This position is with the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). WCB provides timely and impartial resolution of disputes arising under the Workers' Compensation Law and Oregon Safe Employment Act.
This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

This position is eligible to telework on a part-time basis once the incumbent has gained the proficiency to perform work independently. However, regular, scheduled office hours are also required.
Here’s what you will do:
As a WCB Law Clerk, you will perform a variety of extensive legal research and writing on complex factual, medical, and legal issues to develop knowledge of Oregon workers’ compensation law.

Here’s what you need to qualify:
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of one year of study at a recognized law school AND a bachelor's degree
Requested Skills:
General knowledge of legal terminology, concepts, and principles
Skills in analyzing and interpreting laws, rules, and regulations and applying them to specific situations
Excellent knowledge of proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and sentence structure
Proficiency in electronic word processing and in electronic research tools, such as LexisNexis
Preference may be given to candidates who are current second- or third-year law students enrolled in an ABA accredited law school or law school graduates

Additional information:
Per the Pay Equity Law passed in 2017, an employee pay assessment will be conducted to determine what pay step the successful candidate will be offered. The assessment will be based on the relevant experience, education, training, and certifications documented in the application materials. On average, candidates new to state service will most likely be offered compensation in the lower to mid-level of the salary range.
The salary range listed is the non-PERS eligible rate. If you are already a participating PERS member or once you become PERS eligible after 6 months of employment, the salary range will increase by 6.95% and the required 6% employee retirement contribution will be deducted from your pay.
This position is subject to a fingerprint background check for any convictions directly related to its duties and responsibilities. Only job-related convictions will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate.
