Position Summary:

The educational and training purpose of this internship is to introduce the intern to the fundamentals of cancer biology, genomics, and epigenetics within a professional lab setting. This will be done especially by prioritizing research literacy, experimental design and techniques, scientific logic, and data analysis in the lab.

Internship Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

Learning the basics of lab safety, and master lab experimental techniques through reading and practice

Developing a foundational understanding of the mechanisms of epigenetics and genetic alterations that drive or inhibit cancer

Improving the ability to read, analyze, and present research/scientific literature and data.

The intern will first read relevant literature regarding the project under the guidance of the postdoc and understand the background regarding the project. Then, the intern will receive safety training from the lab and begin shadowing and learning the techniques needed. The intern will then conduct the experiment under the supervision and guidance of the postdoc. The intern will also be shown how to read a specific paper and prepare a journal club in the lab meeting

Expected Outcomes:

1. Developing foundational skills for working in a professional research laboratory, including laboratory safety practices and core experimental techniques such as western blotting, MTT assays, and mammalian cell culture.

2.Gain experience with common molecular and cellular biology techniques, including RT-qPCR, MTT assays, and western blot approaches, while learning how these methods are applied in cancer research.

3. Ability to critically read and analyze scientific literature, integrate findings from previous studies into ongoing research, and effectively communicate scientific concepts and results.

We welcome talented individuals of all backgrounds regardless of gender, sex, religion, race, national origin, citizenship, age, disability, perceived disability, pregnancy, pregnancy-related condition, reproductive health decisions, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, HIV/AIDS, marital status, covered veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by local, state, or federal laws, rules, or regulations.
