About the Role

Who We Are

Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program is delivering more GO service across the network, including the capacity to deliver two-way service every 15 minutes or better on core routes. Work is already underway on new track, station renovations and infrastructure upgrades on parts of the Lakeshore, Stouffville, Kitchener and Barrie lines. The investment will generate thousands of new jobs and economic opportunities across the region. The ONxpress Civil Joint Venture is comprised of Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc. and FCC Canada Ltd. This multidisciplinary team leads the delivery of civil and track works, leveraging global expertise to introduce innovative solutions across the GO Transit network.

 

What You’ll Do

 

Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the junior estimator will have the opportunity to support the ONxpress Construction Joint Venture (CJV) Estimating team. This is an 8–12-month opportunity to be part of one of the largest projects in Canada.

 

 

  • Gain knowledge and experience in construction estimating with various scopes of work including civil, structures, track, stations
  • Review drawings and tender documents to understand scope of work and submission requirements
  • Exposure to design models and integrated digital delivery (IDD) software for the project scope and how it generates quantities.
  • Prepare bills of quantities (BOQ), supported by take-offs of other quantities using various techniques including Bluebeam.
  • Develop an understanding of how to create material price lists (from the BOQs), labor costs, equipment requirements and costs, and pricing of CBS items.
  • Gain experience and knowledge about how procurement works and assist in obtaining pricing from subcontractors and suppliers,
  • Research historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis, benchmarking, reports, etc.) and compile summary reports to develop guidelines and support estimating for the project.
  • Maintain files of working documents for back-up to estimating figures.
  • Prepare the estimating deliverables for several stages of submissions.
  • Gain knowledge of the design process.
  • Other duties assigned by the Estimating Managers

 

What You’ll Bring:

  • Currently enrolled in a university or technical college diploma in Civil Engineering or Construction Management,
  • Knowledge of the estimating process and techniques would be a strong asset
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand construction drawings
  • basic knowledge of construction, contracts and cost control.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to create and maintain strong relationships, strong communication skills, and attention to detail; as well as the ability to work effectively and accurately in time-sensitive situations within a team
  • Proficient in standard Microsoft software (Excel, word, etc.) experience of adobe, Visio, and blue beam is also considered an asset

 

Expected compensation for this role is between $20-$25 hourly based skill and experience level. Applicants must be enrolled in a relevant university or college program to be eligible for the opportunity. Only students eligible to complete an 8–12-month co-op term will be considered.
