The Planning Service provides a source of professional expertise to assess planning applications and to write planning policies that are used during the assessments and to monitor change and development to make sure that the planning service is contemporary

Our Chartered Town Planner Apprenticeship consists of 60-month long opportunity to be at the forefront of the growth agenda within the Council and apply your ‘can-do’ attitude whilst working towards  a Chartered Town Planner Apprenticeships. Candidate will finish with a Degree and Masters and The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Chartership.


The Job – working for the Planning Division within the Place Department in the Council you will: 

  • Enter the Degree Apprenticeship Chartered Town Planner at Level 4.
  • Undertake a development programme leading to a Level 7 Chartered Town Planner qualification as part of an apprenticeship.
  • To be responsible for assisting the planning team with their caseload of planning infrastructure policy and delivery of planning related projects in accordance with development proposals.
  • To work alongside the teams within planning to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in technical support, planning policy, infrastructure delivery, spatial planning projects, plan making, planning enforcement, urban design, and heritage.
  • Promote customer satisfaction and quality customer service when delivering our services to stakeholders.
  • Learn to provide advice on a range of development proposals, the complexity of which will rise with progression through the degree course from simple to more complex proposals and projects.
  • With support, learn how to defend the Council’s decisions at appeals to the Planning Inspectorate, the complexity of which will rise with progression through the career grade from simple to more complex proposals and projects.


Training and Development – Within your role you will:

  • Complete a development programme leading to a Level 7 Chartered Town Planner qualification as part of an apprenticeship funded by the Council. This will involve attendance at a college and/or completing tasks in the workplace (depending on specific course requirement).
  • Join a personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your time with the Council.

After you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a professional qualification which will improve your chances of finding work either within the Council or with another employer or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship elsewhere. 

You will have networked across the Council and be aware of the internal job market during your time with us and we will provide support on your approach to the wider job market as part of your development programme.

  • Open to everyone aged 16+ who have lived in the UK for three years.
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English, or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above) or a Level 2 Apprenticeship.
  • Have lived in the UK for the past 3 years (as part of the funding requirement).
  • Not currently be qualified in Level 4 Construction (Construction site supervisor) apprenticeship Higher National Certificate (HNC) or above.
  • Currently not undertaking any other formal form of study (e.g., college or university course).
