Thesis Topic: 

Data Lineage for enhanced Data Lake Governance

Project Description:

Data lineage is a critical component of data governance, providing a comprehensive view of the flow and transformation of data across an organization. It tracks the lifecycle of data from its source to its destination, ensuring transparency, traceability, and accuracy. By capturing the origins, transformation, and usage of data, data lineage will help Verisign manage their data assets more effectively, reduce compliance risks, and enhance decision-making processes.

The goal of this project is to perform a state-of-the-art analysis of the available solutions that can be integrated to Verisign data lake. The tool will represent graphically the lineage of each dataset stored on the data lake and being transformed by a multitude of services. It will be integrated with our Control Plane, a home-grown tool to manage resources and datasets internally.

During this project, the student will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about Data Lineage and Data Governance, to design and implement a prototype adhering to the best practices in terms of security, reliability and availability.

Goals:

  • State of the art analysis about data lineage tools.
  • Recommendation about tools integration or home-grown solution to implement our use case.
  • Understand Verisign data lake and design a data lineage architecture to store all the metadata.
  • Develop or integrate a visualization tool to display data flow and datasets.
  • Enhance the visualization tool with meta data regarding the monitoring, telemetry, usage, etc.
  • The proposed prototype should be deployed on Verisign Kubernetes cluster.

Prerequisites:

  • Fluency in both written and spoken English (all documents must be written in English)
  • Candidates must have a valid work permit for Switzerland and successfully pass a background check clearance to be eligible to work on this project
