Position Summary

Reporting to the Forestry Supervisor (or designate), the Student – Urban Forestry & Invasive Species Analyst is responsible for assisting with field data collection related to the City’s urban forest and invasive species monitoring programs. The position supports tree inventory and inspection activities within municipal parks and assists in mapping and documenting Phragmites australis (Common Reed) infestations across City-owned lands.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inventory and inspection of municipal trees in parks, trails, and open spaces and along road segments.

  • Collect and record tree data including species identification, diameter at breast height (DBH) and general condition.

  • Assist in updating and maintaining the City’s tree inventory database and other assets as needed.

  • Identify and report hazardous or high-risk trees requiring immediate attention.

  • Survey and map locations of Phragmites australis using GPS-enabled devices and GIS applications.

  • Survey and mapping of additional invasive species as needed (e.g. Japanese Knotweed, Oak Wilt, Spotted Lanturnfly)

  • Document invasive species data, including location, density, and extent of infestation.

  • Assist with data entry, verification, and quality control of collected information.

  • Support preparation of maps, reports, and summaries related to forestry and invasive species management programs.

  • Comply with all City health and safety policies and procedures and report hazards as required.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Forestry, Arboriculture, Environmental Science, Geography, or related fields.

  • Knowledge of tree identification and basic forest health assessment is an asset.

  • Familiarity with invasive species, particularly Phragmites australis, is considered an asset.

  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) or mobile data collection tools is preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail and accurate data collection skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to perform outdoor work in varying terrain and weather conditions.

  • A valid Class G driver’s license in good standing may be required.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily outdoor work in parks, natural areas, and roadside environments.

  • Exposure to insects, weather variations, uneven terrain, and dense vegetation.

  • Use hand-held GPS units, tablets, and other field equipment.
