About the Role

The Biorepository Operations Intern is a part-time, paid internship position designed for college students pursuing a degree in life sciences, health sciences, or a related field. The intern will support the day-to-day operations of the ABS biorepository, including the accessioning of incoming biospecimens, management of cold-chain storage, and coordination of inbound and outbound shipments. This is a hands-on, onsite role that provides meaningful exposure to biobank operations, regulatory compliance, and laboratory logistics in a professional research services environment. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Biorepository Operations and always follow established standard operating procedures (SOPS).

 Job Objectives

Data & Accessioning: Receive, verify, and process incoming biospecimens (blood, tissue, urine, and other biological materials) per SOPs. Confirm sample integrity, labeling accuracy, and chain-of-custody documentation. Enter specimen data into LIMS or other tracking databases with a high degree of accuracy

Storage Operations: Assign and place specimens into appropriate storage conditions (ambient, refrigerated, -20°C, -80°C, or liquid nitrogen). Perform routine inventory audits and location verification scans. Assist with freezer organization, consolidation, and maintenance, following all safety procedures.

Shipping & Receiving: Prepare specimens for outbound shipment in compliance with guidelines established through SOPs and Work Instructions for biological materials. Package samples with appropriate dry ice, absorbent materials, and secondary containment. Receive incoming shipments, document arrival condition, and escalate deviations. 

General Operations Support: Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment. Assist with supply inventory and restocking of consumables. Participate in team meetings and quality improvement initiatives. Support SOP updates and training materials as directed.

Education & Experience

Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (sophomore standing or above preferred). Pursuing a degree in Life Sciences related field.

Experience: No prior professional laboratory experience required; relevant academic coursework or lab rotations are a plus. Preferred: familiarity with basic laboratory techniques, data entry, cold-chain or cryogenic concepts, or experience with LIMS/database systems. 


Working Conditions | Physical Requirements

Onsite only (2 Reads Way, New Castle, DE). This position involves primarily physical, standing work in a laboratory and warehouse environment. Interns will regularly work with biological specimens and cryogenic materials and must comply with all biosafety and PPE requirements. Exposure to temperatures ranging from ambient to -196°C (liquid nitrogen) is expected. Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs. All required safety training will be provided prior to beginning work activities.
